Ok so im buying the eVGA 780i FTW and it says it comes with 7.1 HD Audio. Well im getting the logitech Z-5500 and was wondering if i would need a 3rd party sound board... cause that puts me right at my budget so if i would then ill just go for the G 51

onboard sound is not the best-its like onboard graphics it does the basic but not the best!!!

im using my onboard with my asus p5k pro because i dont have good speakers but if i buy good speakers i will buy a new card to compliment them!!

you dont get good sound just because you have good speakers, the amp/sound card has to be good aswell

personaly i would get your speakers (logitech Z-5500) and save up get a new sound card, atleast when you get your new sound card you'll be able to tell the difference

personaly i think onboard sound is getting alot better than it was especialy on the newer boards that have HD sound 5.1 or 7.1

I had Realtec HD on mine and it sounded good for onboard but i decided to upgrade to a Soundblaster 7.1 in my siggy and i was blown away with the diffrence.

i only have Logitech x-140 speakers aswell,i plan to upgrade to 7.1 later.

Well it said HD audio so i didn't know if it would cut it..... on that note, what card would you recommend .... is it worth it to buy a big dollar card like the Asus D2X?

Im really looking at the Asus D2X... however it costs almost as much as my surround sound system.... is it worth it? or just get the Fatal1ty or something cheaper?

The difference between a $100 and $200 sound card is not very noticeable. You're just paying for the latest technology which costs a lot to produce, but doesn't produce what it costs, if you get what I mean.
I personally have a X-Fi Fatal1ty Xtremegamer that I found on clearance at Best Buy for $60, that's a steal considering their regular price of $160.
However, I upgraded from a Soundblaster Live! 24 bit and although the sound quality is noticeably better, I can't see someone spending over $100 for it. So, my point is any decent sound card will be fine, you don't have to spend that much money. I recommend any of the X-Fi cards.
