Is optimization software really necessary?

I called a major online store today to order 1 gb of ram to add to my destop that already has 1 gb. He said that is a good idea but to get the true effect of the additional ram, I should buy optimization software. He said it is regularly $60 but he would give it to me for $30 if I bought it at the same time as the memory. He said this software would assure me that my computer would always run fast. That does appeal to me but is this sales hype or is there substance to what he is telling me. I am a newbie so please keep your explanation of optimization software in simple terms. Thank you. Frank

"HE SAID" is the key there not to buy since that was motive to "Sell" something you don't need. Smart maintainence kept up on a periodic schedule like the occasional defrag of the drive(s) when fragmentation is seen, reducing startup clutter with the msconfig utility to free up ram and lesson the number of items slowing Windows there will do far more then most 3rd party garbage being sold.

Happy and safe ones there too! Use the $30 you saved for someone without you may know. You'll likely be even happier! :D

:) Yeah, that software is a scam. I actually tried it once and it made things worse instead of better. Good deal on not buying it.

BTW: A little tip, your retailler knows it's crap too, and that's why he was so eager to give it to you at half price. RAM is so cheap right now, you're not doing a retailler any favors by buying it unless you buy 100 of them. You make like $5 to $10 a stick (on the outside, if you're really lucky).
