i'm running xp and service pack 2 won't work for me. to avoid viruses i installed zone alarm (everyone seems to like that one) .
i keep reading that in the control panel it says "firewall" even without service pack 2. well it doesnt in mine. in the internet options box under "privacy" there is a slider for cookie blocking. is that the fire wall? if so should it be set at allow all cookies now that zone alarm is in?
thanks for your time

The built in windows firewall is alright, but there are other options such as ZA's free firewall. Definately go with the ZA firewall, it comes with every package ZA has to offer, so you definately have it. The difference between SP2 and SP1 is that in SP2, the firewall is on by default.

If you have SP1 and want to upgrade to SP2, please have your computer cleaned of malware first. Installing SP2 while your computer is infected in many cases does a lot more damage. It could even lead to having to reformat your computer. So please have your computer cleaned out by a professional. You can post a HJT log here, or you can go to other forums such as malwareremoval.com and post your log there. It's a free service, and they won't stop until your computer is clean.

The only time XP SP2 doesn't work is if you have an illegal version of XP. Other than that it will install. To be honest I have never had an issue putting it on, even on crappy computers.

Anyways, to answer your question, the original XP and SP 1 didn't have the firewall built in. Only SP2.

thanks. with zone alarm now blocking me from going on the internet so i disabled it. then went to internet options to the privacy tab and set it for medium high. is that like a firewall and how good is it compared to zone alarm and why dose my zone alarm that had worked so well not let me on the net?

The privacy settings in your browser is not a firewall at all, and the windows firewall is also completely useless... As for the ZoneAlarm firewall, there must be some setting that got changed. I'm not terrible familiar with all the different settings in their, but a desciption/outline will still help. :)

ZA was great until it blocked me from going on line. i dis abed all other protections like norton, spysweeper etc. and it still won't work. the only way is to keep ZA disabled.
thanks all

Windows Firewall is most certainly better than none. I find ZA to be not much more than a pain in the butt, but I must admit it is quite effective.
