Is the 8800GT worth the extra $50 when compared to the 9600GT?

I am going to click the buy button on my new computer tomorrow, and am trying to decide between the 8800GT and 9600GT. I know they perform just about the same in most reviews, but the 9600GT has fewer stream processors. Does this mean that the 8800GT had more stream processors than it could ever use, or will future games widen the difference between the two cards? Are there any other differenced between the two cards?

Also, I heard the power consumption and heat generation was lower on the 9600GT, is this true?

If I am only going to gain a few frames by going with the 8800GT, I'd rather save my money. But if there are other reasons to go with the 8800GT, I'll get that one.

Thank you.

from what ive seen and heard, the 9600gt cant compete with the 8800gt. i would definitely go for the 8800gt if you can afford it. im running crysis all on very high settings and getting smooth frame rates... for $275, you cant really beat that :D

Same here, go with 8800gt, i once think about getting 9600gt instead of 8800gt but the performance measure counts that 8800gt is better..... A lot

the 9600gt from what I've heard is pretty much a stripped down version of the 8800gt, and then put on higher clocks. (same as they did before with the 6800GT and the 6800GS for example)

9600GT is based on G94 core, not G92

On average 9600GT performs just 10-15% slower than 8800GT and neck to neck with HD3870

i would buy the 32mb laptop video card and hammer it into your pci-e slot, no im jk, i have a 8800gt 512mb superclocked, and it is amazing, enjoy your new pc with the amazing card
