Is the difference in performance between an EVGA 8600gt (newegg $89 256mb , $129 512mb) and a radeon 3850 (Best Buy $160) worth getting the more expensive one? Thanks in advance for the help.

Well, it depends, if you are not a very heavy gamer, or you only play the occasional shooter 
You're better off with the 8600GT 256MB first because the 8600GT is a low-mid end card for gaming these days and paying $40 just for 512MB of memory is not worth it.
On the other hand if you want to play games at medium/max settings in a nice resolution with decent FPS, get the HD3850, paying the extra $20 from the 8600GT 512MB has only one answer: Do it!. You wont regret the HD3850, outperforms both versions of the 8600GT easily.
