If you are selling your computer or for any other reason wish to make sure your hard disk drive doesn't contain any sensitive information about you a simple disk format won't do it.
If you want to fully erase your hard disk drives using a bootable media I would recommend the free & open source software DBAN (http://dban.sourceforge.net/)
