Is there a virus that can do this?

Is there a virus, program that will shut down your monitor. Because every hour or so my monitor just goes blankly black, so I'm forced to manually restart the computer. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot?

Is it a laptop?

Like said, check your power options and standby, hibernate, screen saveer settings.

If you think it is a virus... then do a scan. Online or use your favorite anti-tool. You can even try to see if your video card have an updated firmware.. and even check the connectors to see if any of them are damaged or anything also.

I know that there are some viruses that play with your other hardwares like cd/dvd drives and such.. but am not sure of the monitor.
 
It's a desktop, and It just randomly starting doing this, I downloaded openoffice.org, could that have something to do with it?
Nevermind, I have found the problem, thanks very much, it was the power option, it was set to turn off every 20 mins..and I never changed it..?

Well, it still is keeping it up even though I've change the settings...I'm stumped.
