Is there a way to have both windows XP & 7 on one machine?

I got a handmedown windows 7 HP laptop from my friend but was really bummed some games weren't compatible with 7. Is there a way to use two OS's on one computer? I do have an external HDD I was thinking of uploading XP on to once I find a copy of XP. I want to be able to switch between XP and 7. Is this possible? Or is there an emulator out there that I can run XP games like Sim City 4 on?

You can install both on one drive, just have to create 2 partitions for the operating systems and it's easier to install xp first.

As the above answer says, you can install them on separate partitions for each operating system. If you're running one operating system, you can't run a program installed on another system. That means you'll need to install programs on each operating system that you want to use them in. You must restart your computer each time you want to switch to a different operating system.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of doing this with my desktop rebuild. I'm going to get a 1TB HDD for that build so I have lots of room for different OS's & lots of my old & new PC games. Having both OS's on one drive would probably be more ideal.

Man, I hate it when old games can't work on newer machines. But at least there's a way around it. Sim City was a great game until I started hearing bad things about Sim City 2013. The Sims 3 also sucked & I have doubts about The Sims 4 being any good. EA seems to be wrecking their Sim franchise and it makes me hesitant to buy a Sim sequel.

could try running in compatible mode. Go to run and query 'run programs'. Should see run programs for previous ver of windows.
