Is there a way to increase max amount of RAM?

I have a Sony Vaio VGN NR240E/T notebook and it came with 1GB (2X512MB) of RAM. I checked crucial.com and must have put in the wrong model number, since the model that I was shown said it could take 4GB. I got a sweet deal on 4GB (2X2GB)OCZ RAM, so I stuck it in. Wouldn't boot up. So, I took out on stick...booted up fine and recognized all of the 2GB stick. So part one of my two part question is: is there any way to get my machine to be able to take 4GB? Part two is: would I be better off leaving a 2GB stick in or getting two 1GB matched sticks if I can't max it out at 4GB?

Thanks in advance! (and there's no reason to be smart, I just don't know the answer)

I read the spec sheet about your computer on the Sony website...it does say 2GB is the max amount of RAM that the computer can use. This code that will allow it to only use 2GB is written in the BIOS of the computer. Their really is not much you can do.

I couldn't find anything on some sort of an updated BIOS that has been released for your computer, I doubt there is an updated BIOS.

The good news is your computer can run the RAM in dual channel mode. You will need RAM in both slots and it will share the work load. What you need to buy is 2 x 1GB sticks of PC4200 533MHz RAM and install that. Having 2GB in a single stick as opposed to 2 x 1GB sticks in dual channel mode will decrease performance.

That's unfortunate you already bought the RAM that won't work right...this is what you need to maximize the performance. 2 x 1GB in dual channel mode.

G-Skill 2x1GB DDR2 PC4200 533MHz for $22

Bodaggit23 and ScOuT,

Thank you for your posts! Sorry it took me so long to thank you, but we had a baby and everything is different now.

I've got a friend that could use the 4GB of RAM in his laptop and I'll just get some more. I can tell with my video editing that it's faster than 1GB that I had before, but if it could be faster, I'm gonna try.

Talk about a real bummer, I paid $58 for 4GB of desktop RAM at Office Depot and didn't notice that it was PC2-3300 instead of PC-5300. Was in a hurry and just missed it. A shame since they won't take it back and the best I could get out of it was $16 on crapBay. I'm gonna hold on to it now until it's rare like PC-133 :)
