... off a drive that is not being detected?

I have a friend who has a HDD we need to get photos and other data off of. Its an old Quantum, and it clicks 2 to 3 times when it turns on.

Also, does opening the HDD hurt the HDD at all?

Yess, dont open the drive.. As it does void the warranty.. and do you think it will really help? The clicking noise is bad.. You can use the western digital lifeguard tools to find out if it is a bad drive, where the errors are etc... But it is not sounding good. You might be able to recvoer the stuff, but you might want to think about a professional doing it aswell, if it is that important.
