is this a failing power supply?

It's a 500W with more than enough Amps on every railing. This is a new PSU and I faced the same problem with the old one so I'm wondering if it's not the PSU's fault. The computer will turn on, open a program or two, and immediately shut off after a few minutes. Then, when I try to turn it back on, it doesn't even go to the bios screen, just all the fans and lights start, then it shuts off. All the while, the motherboard light stays green. I have to turn off the power switch in the back, and wait about 10 minutes to get the computer to boot into windows again.

P4ht 3.2
1.5 gb of ram (3 sticks)
160gb Sata
Radeon 9800

This didn't happen for about the first month of having the new PSU. I'm almost 100% certain it is the psu, but I don't want to waste money buying a new one if this one is fine, both fans spin inside it. The thing that's gotten me baffled is the having to wait a while to turn the computer on again.

the RAM was fine under the old PSU, the reason i replaced the old PSU is because when I got a SATA hard drive to replace my old PATA, the PSU couldn't handle the power requirement. (It was a 350watt psu.)

The PSU is certainly your most likely fault.

Are you sure your old PSU couldn't handle the load? A SATA drive doesn't take any more power than a PATA one.

What PSU do you have?

I'm not very surprised, it's a 500Watt UltraV with dual railings, and 15+17A on the 12 Volt. It's this one

And one thing to be noted is that the SATA I got is a western digital that has a strange power connector. It has a really wide one that looks like a stretched out SATA and a normal 4-pin molex. The computer only shuts off when I begin doing a stressful task on either the hard drive or cpu.

I know I am not a mod but, please use the categories. I rely on that to see who needs help with what.

I have a 500W with similar hardware, no trouble. Your problem is that Apevia PSU, Mistake!

It certainly sounds like the PSU. I had a similar problem and new PSU helped. Are you using the new cord from the new PSU box? On accident I used the old cord and the computer didn't even turn on. Kinda weird but I switched it and it worked great

It sounds like the PSU, but it could be other things... Bad RAM would be my 2nd choice under the PSU.

rly? why would you say ram? i would normally think that ram problems would show the second you turn the computer on... like it wouls seize up the second ram was required...

not always lovely, on my compy AMD Sempron it had 512 RAM. no blue screens, but if i opoen a program it automatically restarts. try and error'd every part and got down to the RAM

and yes the PSU sounds like it.
