Is this a good video card for my new computer?

Im building myself a new computer for general use, and some gaming. Im also wanting it to be good enough to run Vista. Ive pretty much chosen what parts im using, Athlon 64 3500+ for the CPU and 1 GB of ram. Now im trying to decide what video card to put in there. I was looking at the ATI Radeon X800XL 256MB from here and I was wondering if that would be a suitable card. If not, any other suggestions from that same price range would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

hmm can you possibly go up to $200?

great card

If you took the time to look, you'd see the card was 161 canadian, the x1950Pro is 200 usd, that is nearly 300 canadian, almost double what he's trying to pay.

The x800xl is a nice card, runs alot of current games with no lag(don't expect to be pushing max on some of the newer games)Its a nicer overclocker,i had that exact model from ati not too long ago and it worked great.I had mine for $130 from CanadaComputers though, may want to check and see if you can order one off them, save ya a good bit.

Btw,it also outperforms the x1600Pro but the x1600pro has SM3 and the x800xl doesn't,does it make a massive difference, unless you are in absolute love with shadowing and stuff, then yeah it would, but if you can live with meager shadowing, then go for it.

EDIT:Forget Canada Computers, they used to have tons instock, seems like they've gone down to instore purchase only.

That card's pretty good for the price, GDDR3 RAM and 256-bit RAM bus. Chip speed is a little on the slow side, but hopefully the extra memory speed and other plusses will make up for it...

EDIT: Actually, here's a couple of cards that might be a little bit better...

This might be the best of the three *and most expensive...:

Yeah, your link is the one I meant to do..., it's getting late and I'm screwing up, I need to go to bed now...

The 7600GT that DCIScouts posted is the best thus far. It is significantly better than either the 6800XT or 6800GS

Personally, I would go with the 7600GT that "DCIScout"s posted because it performs as good as X850xt but cheaper, and it supports SM3.0

Well cool guys. Ive decided not to go with the X800xl because the 7600 and the 6800 are both superior. I would get the 7600, but what does the 128 bit mean compared to the 256 bit on both the X800xl and the 6800? Is it downgrade in performance to have the 128 bit apposed to 256?

I should also add that the games in particular that I want to play are Company of Heroes, Scarface, Dark Messiah and Half Life 2 Episode 1.

If you have a good CPU and 1GB RAM or more then you will able to play the games you listed above without any problem with 7600GT

7600GT has high speed memory, so it is not a big problem if it has only 128bit memory interface.

A video card with 128bit memory interface and with 1400MHz memory speed will have the same memory bandwidth as video card that has 256bit memory interface and 700MHz memory speed.

Sounds good, I think ill go for the 7600 then. And as for the CPU, Im going for the Athlon 64 3500+ so I think that one will be good, from what ive heard thats going to be the best mid range CPU i can get, otherwise id have to upgrade to something twice the price.

funny because the x800 and x850 cards are superior than the 6800's...and the 7600GT and yeah,in some games it will make a huge difference to have a 256bit card than a 128.
