Is this a pathetic PC?

Hi,

I headed out to buy a PC a few days back, and like many others, was on a shoestring
budget.

I didn't buy the monitor, KB/Mouse etc. Just the cabinet and the internals.

I had to fit it all within 25k (Indian), so this is what I got:

1. Intel 3.2GHz (the normal one, not EE)
2. 1GB DDR2 667 MHz Memory (Single stick, & I don't know if it's dual channel)
3. ASUS P5RD2 VM Motherboard
4. GeForce 7300LE 512 MB ($ 63 only)
5. 80GB HDD
6. DVD Writer
7. Cabinet with four total fans and a good SMPS
8. Creative 5.1 system

Now I've made a complete laughing stock out of myself amongst my friends, most
of whom who have the luxury of owning dual 7900GTX, ATI X1950 XTX with dual core
cpus etc and GBs of dual channel ram.

But is it really true that with this setup, even simple games won't run? I don't
expect anything more than 30fps at 800x600 with everything turned off. Will that
be possible? I have only two games: NFS Underground and Enter the Matrix. Everyone
is telling me I'll get max 10 to 15 FPS with those games even at minimum settings.

And is it true that Geforce 7300LE is strictly an HDTV card for better images and
pictures, and not meant for gaming? And is it true that any Athlon 64 system with
integrated graphics on the motherboard will easily beat this setup?

My vendor told me that it can be used for playing games, but my friends are telling
me that only games like Quake I and Road rash are suitable for it. I've become the
center of attraction for having bought the cheapest card available.

I can't tell until logistics bring it in to my new home (hopefully by tomorrow night),
but in the meantime, please let me know, if this setup is really that horrible for
gaming, considering the fact that I'm only a casual gamer.

Ever since I've been told these things, I've been really upset. God knows if I've
been rooked.

Don't worry... they will run :) true, the 7300 may not be the most powerfull card around, but its decent :)

If your friends were really friend, they wouldnt laugh about it tbh.. just because they spend a load of money on a pc, doesnt mean everyone has to.

and no.. a athlon64 setup using the Nvidia 6100 onboard gfx wont outperform this one. ;)

besides that, you can alway's upgrade the grafic's card later on if you really want to :) (I assume its pci-express? then you could get a 7600GS, or (when they are realesed) a lower end Geforce 8 series card,.. wich will be at lease more powerfull than a x1900xtx :) )

anyway's... Dont give a damn about what your 'friend' are telling you. that pc will run great :)

2. 1GB DDR2 667 MHz Memory (Single stick, & I don't know if it's dual channel)
it is not dual channel as long as it's single stick

your friends are laughing because this is not the PC you should by these days
but it's fine
will run most game on low-mid settings

i currently am running a slower pc and i'm perfectly happy with it, i get decent frame rates in half life 2, counter stike source, and Far Cry.

I hope you mean 2.5K even then, if it cost that much you overpaid. All in all it's ok, nothing spectacular but it's not horrible.

i was thinking the same thing...

i think its a pretty decent computer. Sure, it would be great to keep up with the new technology, but the value drops just too fast. You could have just as much fun playing slightly older games.

plus, with the money you saved, you could buy a console or something

At the end of the day the key thing is that its upgradable too.

For instance, about a year ago i was running a pretty low end computer, all bottom of the range stuff and absolutely no areas that could be upgraded to make it worthwhile. Since then I was passed a computer by a friend on the cheap. Much more up to date and in line with todays techniology.

Sinec then i've been able to swap out parts one piece at a time to upgrade and improve. The great side of that is not paying out a massive amount on a new system. Instead just a £100 here or there every few months to improve.

Thats what you're now able to do with yours. The system is pretty damn good anyway, the gfx are possibly whats holding it back a bit but thats something you can change in the future.

Ignore your mates, boasting about their better computer is just their compensation for lacking in every other dempartment as a human being. If you can be happy with what you have (and you should be) then you'll be the much better person :)

Hey, I just got my pc and tried a few game demos!!!

Wow, everything is working nicely even at 1024x768!!!!:D

Even Quake III demo and NFS Carbon demo ran smoothly!!!!!!

This is all I expected from this card, and I'm sooooooooooo
happy that it's performing this nicely.

Anyways, thanks a lot for all the encouragement guys, all of
you are great.

See ya soon. Got some games to play!! :P
