Compaq EVO N1001C.
I know that it is an older system. Obviously the older systems arent as good as the newer ones. However I am looking for a reliable system for business use (arg/ lawn care) and have a limited budget to get all my stuff together. This is the only laptop that i have found locally that fits my budget.

correction. Also found a IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T42. How do these compair??

I beg to differ. Unless hp/compaq's spend more time down than operating. I have had 3 toshiba's, all bought new, and none have lasted more than 3 months without some kinda problem requiring it to be send off. Of coarse, I could just have bad luck or something.

poor you. My toshiba last 6 years...

is it possible that the build quality was better 6 years ago vs. two years to current. I bought my first one back in deciember 2008 followed by another (faster processor and more hdd space) in june 2009 and the last one in feb. 2010.
The first one went down due to a hard drive crash. I have no clue how, but the factory tecks said it was my fault.
The second was not my fault, but was unfixable. It was destroyed by minor flood damage (along with my truck, and 20,000 dollars damage to teh house.)
the last one still works, kinda. It got dropped by my sister. That damaged the LCD, and caused two of the usb ports and the internal speakers to stop functioning.

Now, I know that laptops are sensitive electronics, and should be handlled with care. However, my last ibm, A thinkpad R52 lasted good. It was dropped several times but always survived. The only reason that it aint functioning is cause i took it apart to replace the processor with a faster one and havent put it back together yet.
I also had an IBM A22e THINKPAD since early 99, and other than being quite slow ( i can literally type faster than the computer can process on word 2007), it lasted till april 18. It went down with the same flood damage as the toshiba.

Anyway, so toshiba is better than HP/Compaq. What about IBM or Dell? Or Apple, Gateway, or Emachines?
I am just looking for something that can handle being out on the jobsite with us. I have a mobile recipt printer that is in my truck, but i need the computer there to use it.

I'm sorry you bought 3 toshiba's, I know if I would have bought one and if it didn't last that long then I would have considered a different brand.

I don't know what it is but I have seen Hp's with tone of problems but all the compaq (same company) I have seen last to a ripe old age.

maybe its just that every company has some bad apples.

And as i said above, only the fiirst one was a company problem, the second was lost to an act of nature, and the last is still working w/ broken lcd.
I have had good luck out of HP, Compaq, and IBM. I had a dell for a while, but did not like the way it ran. It was just too slow for me (P3- 650 mhz).
