Is This Bad? My CPU Temps are around 85oC+? Upto 90oC sometimes? What do I do?

Hey guys, my pc has been overheating lately and shutting itself off for protection here are my CPU temps and fan speed:
60oC When started up
70oC 2 minutes later
75oC 3 minutes later
80oC 5 minutes later
85oC 8 minutes later
88oC 10 minutes later

CPU Fan Speed 3125 RPM - 3183 RPM

From what I have read, these are fairly high. What should I be doing to prevent it from overheating? Maybe some new paste and clean out all fans. Add a fan to the back of my tower to suck out hot air etc?

First are you using a stock or 3rd cpu cooler and does the case have any vents if there's no front intake fan seen? High board temps will keep cpu temps up. But one question here would be how are you reading the temps there... hardware monitor in bios naaa... 3rd party program likely since you have everything timed there. Sometimes the program used gives off wild temps while nothing is that hot due to a glitch.

My 3800+ runs 28c - 34c (idle-load), to be expected from a 65w cpu..

PC Wizard 2008 tells me my cpu is running at roughly 80c almost constantly.. where-as bios gives the above readings.

As stated before, the program might not work properly with your system.

What make and model is the board there? If it's an Asus use their Probe II temp program that comes with the software disk or the support site. That's usually more accurate then others. PC Wizard 2008 outdoes SpeedFan on Vista for this.

The older free version of Everest Home Edition often saw software glitches giving off super high cpu temps having people puzzled then. Looking in the bios as well as trying a reinstall or different program will show if you are seeing false readings with the one you are now using.

I am not sure on the cooler I am using, I would say probably stock

The only vents it has is at the back.

I am reading the temps off the monitor in BIOS.

Also, there is a slot at the back for a fan but there is no fan, should I get one for it to suck out hot air?

Cheers

Incorrect SpeedFan/Everest/whatever temps aside, BIOS controls the shutdown temp, so something is obviously wrong there. Boot up your system and enter BIOS. Go to the Hardware Monitoring area and just let it sit for a bit. Make note of the temps every few minutes.

Is your CPU fan spinning? Is there dust caking the actual heatsink itself and preventing airflow? Is your Thermal Paste still good

Sorry, I just read the part about the BIOS temps. Are you saying that you have a fan port at the rear of the case, but no fan? if so, YES get a fan! Seeing as how those are BIOS temps you were reading as well, you may want to remove the HSF from the CPU and re-apply thermal paste.

No case fans at all! !!! That will certainly see high temps all around not just for the cpu!

The rear case fan is used for seeing hot air blown out while front and side fans are used for drawing cooler room air in. Sounds like an old style case with nothing in the front as far as vents even. That will likely be an 80 or 90mm rear fan used there. Need a new case?

With a P4 installed if that's the cpu you are running on the 478 board there you will definitely want a 3rd party cooler as well as looking at another case that does have the front and rear 120mm case fans. P4s run hotter stock then any other cpus while no fans at all and only a stock hsf is a disaster in the waiting at the present moment.
