I am getting ready to build a computer. I am just going the get the basic components now, becuase i am a little low on money now but i need a computer. This is what i have come up with. I already have a harddrive, mouse, keyboard, floppydrive, CDrom... im just going to get the essentials for now then upgrade later. THis is what i have, let me know what you think...

AMD Athlon XP 2700+, 333MHz FSB, 256K Cache Processor http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-342&depa=0

Kingston 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-2700 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-144-202&depa=0

Let me know if i am missing anything or if i should change some things. I am sure i will get comments about the power supply, i am just going to leave it, if it is crap ill buy a new one locally. Just let me know what you think

Thanks, Pete

The only thing I might suggest you change would be the CPU ... get the Barton which has twice the L2 Cache :). As for the PSU, I would probably use it but realize that it's most likely some no-name PSU (either that or it's a Raidmax PSU ...)

Yeh I agree with them aswell, go for somthing like Barton as it would be much better for you, The principle behind cache is that a processor’s cache will store the most common information...

When an application needs that information it will first check the L1 cache, and then L2 cache, and then L3 cache (if applicable), and then go to Ram... I like the case and the ram thought... :o

Good setup, i suggest a new PSU though. I have a Raidmax case also w/ supposedly 420w but its nowhere near that. Get an Antec, forton, or enermax. Those abit mobos take some juice!

I ordered the ram cause it was on sale. Kingston 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200. Did anyone else have any thoughts or comments before i order the rest of the parts???

1. What operational temps are you working in?
2. You actually come close to using the rated 420W or is it becayse of the temps?

Nah .... you should be good to go! :)

I got all the parts and I put it together. It works great. I had a strange problem though. We set it all up and it wouldnt post or give a picture. It had a steady - BEEP (pause) BEEP (pause) and so on. Several different websites said that meant a problem with RAM. I tired another stick of RAM, still didnt work. My friend thought it was the mobo. We were reading that the CPU heatsink clamp actually bows the board, and the RAM doesnt make contact in the center. So we unclamped it, pushed the RAM in tight and tryed it. It still didnt work, so we though it was a bad mobo. We took it out and decided to try without heatsink clamp and on flat surface. It booted. So we figured that it did'nt work because not all the mounting posts were in. So we put every single mounting post possible. Then put it back together. Now everything is working great.
