Is this kind of speed slow for ethernet connection??

Hey,
Today I upgraded my Pc from MCE to Vista home premium and I am trying to transfer my recorded tv files from my laptop(also home premium) to the pc. I have my laptop and computer connected with a crossover cable. I am able to establish connection and transfer files but the speed they are transfered at is from 8- 10mb/s. IN the task manager I see that network utilisation is hovering around about 96%. Am I completly wrong in thinking I shout be getting much better speeds?? My crossover cable is unsheilded and has 8 coloured wires which i as far as i know supports 100mbps. My pc has a 100/1000 ethernet and laptop 10/100. Any suggestions greatly apreciated!!!

Is ther any kind of harddrive test I can do to test it????? Because its really annoying getting the low speeds and burning all my recorded tv to dvd's first is really a pain!
