Is this likely a bad HDD?

I just built a computer for a friend. It has a 1TB WD HDD. Trying to load Win7 just copying and expanding files at the beginning took over an hour. The red light showing HDD activity was on constantly, and there was very limited activity of the CD drive Win7 was copying from. I had a similar issue once with a HDD that died. In that case the red light showing HDD activity would come on but there would be no noise suggesting the HD was working, and the computer would completely freeze. Replacing that hard drive fixed the problem, and this seems the same kind of behavior.

Before I try to do other things to trouble shoot this problem, does this seem likely to be a problem with the HDD?

TIA.

Was it the caviar black series? Or what specific drive was it? It seems the cavair black series are having problems. Had to rma one of mine because of it being extremely slow and sometimes not detectable.

Yes, it is a caviar black. It also is interesting you mention it not being detected, because on one attempt to boot, it was not detected.
