Im still very new to computers. And learning more and more each day. The more I ask ( silly question or not the more I learn )

This is my set-up:
i7 non-OC
MSI 970 GTX
z97x gaming MOBO
corsair 750w PSU
Samsung 850 pro 512 SSD
4tb Toshiba HDD
16gb ballistix RAM

Here's my question.
Is it ok to run 2 144hx monitors and a 60hz monitor on this single GPU?
Or do I need another 970 GPU?

*** I'm not much of a gamer, but when I get some free time I would certainly like to try ( *cough cough* We have a 2 yr old and 2 month old so we have minimal free time ).
1) "Why 3 monitors?" Why not? I have the deskspace and I have extra monitors ( I only have 1 x 144hz monitor @ this tie )
2) "What do I use my PC for?" Internet. Browsing. Surfing, videos etc... Nothing demanding. But @ some point in time I'd like to dabble into picture and home video editing etc... Plus I always have multiple tabs and windows open @ once so the more monitors the easier it is.
3) "Isnt this an overkill?" Yup.
4) "Why 144hz?" Have you seen these things? WOW!! I bought an acer 24" 144hz 2 months ago from newegg on sale. Watching videos is amazing.

So we know I have an overkill set-up for what I do. Yes this money could be put elsewhere etc... And I don't need any of this for what I do. I know that. But it's fun. I see it like this: Why does the guy down the road spend $40,000 and 6 years rebuilding a 1972 muscle car in his garage and invest $18,000 on shiny chrome performance parts when he doesn't drive it in the rain? Only put on 1,000 miles a year and never goes above 65mph when the car will do 160 mph? Because he can. And he has fun. This is how I see it.

Ok enough with that.
1) Can I run 2 144hz monitor on a single 970? a)will there be performance issues with 1 GPU?
2) Do I need a 2nd 970 GPU?

thanks everyone

you could run a 144hz screen and a 60hz screen as the 970 has 1x HDMI and 1x Display port. you need Display port for 144hz as HDMI is maxed at 60hz.

I know GTX 980's have 3 display ports which would work for you. running 3 monitors will be fine for general use but not for gaming. The 980 would be fine with a single one but struggle with more. If you lowered a couple settings you could maybe do it or get a respectable fps.

Let me see if I got this right....
I have 3 monitors right now.
1 Acer gaming 144hz 24" monitor ( best monitor I have )
1 5yr+ HP 19" 60hz monitor
1 8yr+ no name monitor 60hz

What connection should I have from my 970 GPU to the Acer 24" 144hz monitor? you are saying I need the Display port connection to my 144hz monitor?

I thought I wanted to use a DVI-D connection to the 144hz monitor?

yes, DVI will support 144hz with 1080p. So yes it will run DVI at 144hz on a 1080p screen. You would need 2 DVI-D and HDMI for 3 monitors for the 970 if you wanted 2 144hz and 1 60hz monitor.

DVI doesnt carry an audio signal aswell so you would need speakers or headphones for sound which is why i dont use DVI.

1. if there's a plug for it, it'll plug in and it will work
2. watching videos will not benefit from a 144hz screen whatsoever. videos are all 23, 30, or 60 fps in general. therefore the extra refreshes just display the same frame a second or third time or however many times.
3. 144hz monitors do benefit you in video games where you get 61+ fps compared to a 60hz screen for obvious reasons
4. if you want to do picture & video editing, color accuracy is the most important thing about your screen.

tn panels in general, which most 144hz panels are, generally have pretty bad color accuracy. what you want to look for are ips panels. they normally have way more vibrant colors and are very accurate as far as how they display the colors. this is important for being able to tell subtle differences in color.

if you're wondering the difference go to a local sports bar and check out how some of the screens look washed out and some of them look like brighter and more vibrant. normally they also have darker blacks which is REALLY important for contrast ratio.
