is it possible to take the dell wireless mini pci card out of my dell inspiron 6400 and replace it with a different mini pci card? really need help on this one, please let me know...thanks

ya so how will i know if its the same size and that it will work normally with windows xp and ubuntu linux? i guess i was kind of looking for exact specs or a link to a card that will work. please let me know, thanks

you dont think i've tried searching everywhere? why would i come here and ask if i havent done any research for myself? if you think you can find what i need then i challenge you to do so if you think its so easy. more power to you if you find something. all i need is help with what i asked and i figured some of you would know more than i do about it. so school me

ok, i accept your challege. after a few google searches, i found this:

1) some inspiron 6400s have integrated wireless cards- thyere mounted in the mo-bo.
2) here is a pic of the non integrated card.
3) here is a link to tutorial on how to swap said card.

i was not able to find what type of card it is because you did not give sufficient info. i would suggest you pull it out, write down the model # and google it.

happy?

yep, sure did. im guessing the tutorial was crapola...
id say youre getting a good deal on that card on amazon

for future reference, that slot is a Mini PCI slot, standardized on any laptop. Just fine a card that works for your situation and install it. just cause it's a dell doesnt mean you cant insert components that are nondell...

actually, i had an old laptop with a mini-PCI slot wireless card, and it was a different size/shape, so, they are not all the same.

maybe not back in the day but eventually, it all becomes standardized and the computers and components become commodities...the pudding is in the services...

ok i got the card installed. is it normal for it to not have as good as reception as my dell card? it only works in linux automatically b/c i havent installed the windows driver. in linux my reception was 78% to 82% consistantly but with this other card its only 48% to 51% from the same exact location. did i do something wrong? i would like the atheros card would've been better all around

are the antennas hooked up? that may be the problem

the antennas are hooked up right and everything. in linux i seem to have about 25% less reception..whats up w/ that? the card did not work at all in windows but now i got it working. sometimes the card just disappears and neither windows of linux even reconizes the card. is this due to bad drivers or whats the deal?
