Alright, well i actually created this account yesterday to ask about upgrading my computer, but a more urgent matter came about this morning, so haven't gotten around to that yet. I used my computer, which runs Windows XP, last night at about 11 o'clock, and then went to bed. I got up this morning, and the computer was on, however the screen was black, you could tell the monitor was getting power, because it was a kind of illuminated black, not just like the screen was off, but the computer wasn't responding at all. I was just like oh great, another windows issue, and thinking it had just frozen or crashed or something, i held the power button down until it shut off, and then went to school. When i got back, i went to start it up, and it goes through the bit at the beginning and allows me to access the BIOS and all, but every time if you let it continue to boot, it just goes black and continues to run without responding... I got out my Knoppix Live CD and proceeded to change the BIOS to boot from CD, and Knoppix booted fine, no problems at all. I can access the Hard drive and all from it. Also, if you don't hit any key to initiate a boot from CD when it asks you to after a restart, that is the last message you get before you see the black screen. There is no cursor on it at all, no nothing, if you couldn't hear the fans running, you'd think the computer was off. I could just back up my music, photos, documents, etc, using Knoppix, format the drive, reinstall windows and such, however i have a lot of programs and stuff i don't want to loose by formatting and doing a fresh install. My school has given me a lot of software to install that i don't have copies for, so i would need to go find copies again, and it would just be a pain, so repairing Windows would be my favorite option. Anyone got any ideas on what is wrong?? I started attempting a windows repair, but had never really done it before, and got sort of confused. Any help at all is appreciated. I've got basic word apps and stuff on my other computers, but this one has the CAD and Photoshop software i need, so kinda stuck not bein able to do stuff right now and need to get it fixed soon. Hmm, well didn't think to try safe mode, not sure if it even boots to that point or not, but will set the computer back up here in a sec and try it. I've pulled the hard drive out and plugged it into my other computer to copy all my music and documents over, so i need to hook it back up. I hadn't installed any updates or anything, just randomly crashed overnight while i was sleeping... had been fine before that.
