damnit i meant to post the AGP card that was stripped
I have AGP

hmm well that changes things since the radeon x800xl dont come in agp. acturally I having a hard time finding a regular radeon x800 agp online. The best options I could fine for under $300 is

geforce 6600GT $189
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-164-039&depa=1
geforce 6800 $244
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-130-202&depa=1

and if yo want to spend a little more then $300
geforce 6800GT $368
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-140-053&depa=1
or if that to much there a striped down 6800GT for $338

could mean many things less pipes, less core, less memory speed, less memory bit, less amount of memory.

In the case of the striped down geforce 6800GT I mention is the following stats.

Asus striped down geforce 6800 GT
core:350mhz
memory: ddr 128 MB
memory speed: 700mhz
memory bits: 256
pipes:16 .

Normle geforce 6800GT
core: 350 mhz
memory: ddr3 256 MB
memory speed 1000mhz
memory bits: 256
pipes:16

As you can see the major difference is the memory speed.

ok so when you compare these cards and consider i dont care about tv out or anything past going straight into my montior

then which is most attractive for heavy game use

1 Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 SE
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-431&depa=1

2 Apollo nVIDIA GeForce 6800GT
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-140-053&depa=1

3 Rosewill nVIDIA GeForce 6800GT
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-164-040&depa=1

4 AOpen nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-135-154&depa=1

5 XFX nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT this ones 4x/8x
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-150-069&depa=1

whats the 4x/8x difference?

6 XFX nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT this ones 8x
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-150-073&depa=1

7 HIS Excalibur RADEON X800 PRO IceQ II Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-161-119&depa=1

the last one is a huge jump up to 399

i want to make sure i buy a video card that is sweet and will last me a long time before it craps out on the games i play

Why does everyone like the 6800 gt so much?
is the x800 a better set?

im trying to understand all of this

my MB is 4x/8x

does that mean anything to me when choosing a card?
can i go with just an 8x card?
or does it have to be a 4x/8x card?

The radeon x800 pro is a waste of money it wont perform as good as a geforce 6800GT and cost more.

4x/8x and 8x is the exact same thing just written differently

The main advantage of why the geforce 6800 GT is so popular is it a 16 pipe line video card. The x800 pro is only 12 pipelines I believe. You cant get a 16 pipeline card cheaper then the geforce 6800 GT (except x800XL but that only comes in pci-e). All the geforce 6800GT you listed above are pretty much the same. I believe all geforce 6800GT are about equal except for the one asus striped down one.

The geforce is a better card in this price range. Once it get close to the $500 and start talking about radeon x800XT and radeon x850XT and geforce 6800 ultra then there a debate over weather geforce or radeon is better.

If I was you I would go with the geforce 6800GT.

#2 up there is the apollo at 368$ its a 256bit 256 meg card
that will kick ass right?

is there a cheaper 6800gt
?

yes that good. With that you will be able to play pretty much any game on max setting. There might be a few exceptions when aa and af is turned up to max and you using high resoultions.

I have not seen any cheaper then the apollo my self but I have not looked in many places other then newegg.

Cards do not come "stripped down", they come as "regular" and "enhanced". The difference is usually VIVO and/or TV/FM tuner support

As for ATi dont give up on them yet, if you hunt around you can get X800s and X800Pros (R423 and R420 respectively) for cheaper than 6800GTs .... noticeably cheaper at times (but it requires research), and ATi is much friendlier for piepline unlocking....

I thought x800 pro was stupid to buy :P

3. It was always stupid to buy the X800Pro
:P

I thought x800 pro was stupid to buy
It is however it doesnt detract from the comment which
1. Was passively prefixed as focusing on ATi cards of similar [financial] value
2. Semantically, the implied potential contradiction doesnt stand as I used the word "was" -- close so definitely credit there hehe :P Not that many people come close but I do make careful use of words ;)
3. Buying a X800Pro is stil stupid in light of of the X800XL or 6800GTs (and some very specific 6800NUs). In light of pipe unlocking things change and while buying a X800Pro may be "stupid" compared to buying a 6800GT -- potentially saving craploads of cash isnt so it comes down to which you value more (or less)
4. Again semantically, the implied contradiction doesnt stand as I didnt make a comment about stupidity or lack thereof :P
