Is This True Or Is It A Legend?

I heard that temperature is one of the main factors for performance and durability of a computer? Is this a true story or is it a urban legend? :D

yes it sorta true about performance, if your computer overheats then you'd get bad performance. And what do you mean by durability of the computer?

the temperature has a major impact on computers performance wise, the higher the temperature of a CPU, the slower it runs, and most Intels lower there clock speed when they get too hot. So the cooler everything is, the better it will perform, this goes for the CPU, memory, RAM, hard drive, ect.

true~but the the temperature is not the only factors that influence the performance and durability of a computer~

the cooler your computer is the longer it will "live". Heat kills hardware fast, and it can also prevent hardware from performing as good.

you CAN bypass alot of temperature safety's (like cpu shutdown on overtemp protect) but that's not recommended. and if you do disable it, and overheat, your hardware can fry very fast. if it doesn't fry, it will certainly run hot and kill it faster.

but just like Jesusloving said, it's not the ONLY factor.

I would say ~40-45C norm...but that can easily be changed if you get better cooling. prescotts are usually pretty hot.

Back To Topic!

Ok guys,

keep it on topic please. Now as to the issue being discussed, its naturally true that the temperature plays a vital role in the life of your PC. The higher the temperature, the higher the generall stress on the components and a higher chance of failure and error. As a result it's clear that a cool environment ensures a longer life. The question is by how much and whether it's really such an issue given the usability of PCs as technology improves at the great paste it does now.

So I shouldn't be burning the sides with a lighter :P Kidding.
I wonder if certain software makes the computer heat up faster that others, I suppose it would if it makes the ram and cpu work faster. I suppose 4GB of ram and 3.6Ghz cpu ought to prevent that.
