Is Toshiba a good name brand for a notebook computer

, i started a therad a few days ago about me being a noob on notebook computers,

they have one at walmart for $900 and its a 512 mb memory and a 80 gb harddrive and has a dual cd/dvd burner, and is widescreen, it also has i link compatible.

i was just wondering cause Im not familiar with noticing the namebrand toshiba with computers, I always see that name on televisions.

i know i can get one online, but the reason i was wanting to get one for wal mart is because if I dont like it or if I have a problem with stuck pixels they have no problem taking it back as long as I have the receipt

Toshiba has been around for a while, one of the early innovators in mobile computing and one of the first to call themselves "NT Certified" (a big plus for companies that bought laptops back in the day). Are they a good brand? Yes, but every brand name has a few good ones and some not so good. Not only that, but many other brands have gotten much better & affordable which led makers like Toshiba and IBM dish out some basic/budget units themselves. Are these budget ones any good? That's totally up to the user who buys them. You'll have to balance affordability with quality and what you're going to use it for. Now if you saw this at Walmart, I'm sure it's one of their budget ones. Which model is it? the A55?

well i wasnt going to spend 900 , im just wanting it to use it when i go to my aunts to download music, cinema trailers, and certain video files cause I cant get fast internet, but I thought there is only a 200 dollar difference in the two they have at wal mart and the other one is a e machines brand, and it has no dvd burner drive , and it is only 40 or 60 gb hard drive ,

can you use burners on laptop as much as you do desktops, I mean , do they wear out faster, casue I burn ALOT of dvds

That all depends on the user. Some people can be really rough on them (notebook or desktop). As for the amount of burns you can do, it's not a problem. When I was in IT, I always used the DVD drive on my laptop for company backups because I knew it'll work with no problems. As for just basic computing like what you're planning to do, I dont see why you can't use the Toshiba. It should be fine. I'd also stay away from the Emachine, I've seen many of those die or some components die. Build quality isn't that great and speakers are horrid.

ok thanks for replying

ok i guess im going to go get it.

i cant rmember the exact model , i just remember that it is

512 memory
80 gb hard drive

iee cable support
the burner drive.

im not even sure if it comes with windows,

if it doesnt can i just use the windows cd that came with my desktop

lemme guess, it's the M45-S2692 right? I got the exact same one from walmart too and it's been fine for everything I've used it for thus far, my only complaint is I don't think it would take any abuse well (haven't done any stress tests but you know what I mean). But I'm very satisfied with it, it's my backup if my desktop goes down or if I use it in class. Oh, and I threw an extra gig of memory in it too, but it ran fine on the 512 if you're not gonna do that.

I am not a computer expert. I do own a Toshiba Satellite notebook computer. I have had it for almost 3 years now and have taken it to Germany 3 times and to Afghanistan. It has never given me any problems and I am very happy with it. I am a soldier in the Army National Guard and have to go to less than computer perfict places and take my Toshiba with me and it has never failed me. I have deployed 3 times to help with hurricane recovery and took my Toshiba with me. It is still going strong to this day. I am looking at getting a new notebook computer soon and all I can say at this point is that it will be another Toshiba.

Those last posts would do excellent for customer reviews for Toshiba. I think the only bad rating on that unit was battery life.

ok , i got this thing now here at my aunts and I hook up the cord and it wont let me connect, she has a cable modem , witht he router, it says I need some kind of networkd key or something

im starting to get discusted with it, I have been told by one person I have talked to by phone that I need a cd that my aunt got with her provider to download on my laptop before it will work , does this make since

she has a ethernet cable connection

Well does she have wireless internet? or is it detecting someone else's network? Also, if she's got a router then you can just connect directly with an ethernet cable.

well i was trying to use the option under network connections called wireless , but ive set up a broadbrand connection now , so we will see ,

k guys

k i just dont know what to do , i guess I will go over there again tommorow morning and see if I can get it to work or not.

I plug that ethernet cable into the back of my laptop and nothing happens, i cant view webpages or nothing.

and the laptop said it found one networkd but needed a networkd code or number before it could connect for safety purposes ,

I cant remember if it was saying that was for wirless or if it was for cable.

I thought maybe it was a security feature or somethign on her computer from letting someone use it , I asked her and she had no idea what I was talking about

Does this mean I get my next Toshiba for free?:D

Well my friend like I stated before I am by far no computer expert. However when I find a product that works and I can depend on it even under less than ideal places, I would hate to try something new so I tend to stick with it.;)

Yes, many are like that. So am I. Like my choice in cars, I owned japanese for a while, then went German for a while (despite Consumer Reports ranking it at highest maintenance). Had 3 German cars & a lifetime of headaches, finally went back to Japanese and now I'm headache free... At the moment. I think I'll be sticking with them for a while.

the svideo

should i be able to hook up the svideo to my projector and see my monitor on the wall , cause i have it hooked up right and its not showing anything

Then there should be an option to switch views. Either a short cut on your keyboard (example: Fn + F8) or within display properties (Control Panel> Display> Settings> Advanced).

i dont know what to do

i dont know what to do , i can get it to connect to her computer

her local are aonnection is linksys lne100tx fast ethernet

mine is marvell yukon 88e something

could that be the problem

No, that's not the problem. What internet service does she have? and it could be assigned to certain MAC addresses. But if I read correctly, that she's got a router, you can just connect to her router with your own cable. Try turning off your wireless so you won't get any interference (so your computer is only looking for a connection through the LAN port).
