Is Windows worth the money and is Linux for You?

Well you cant legally run OS X on anything other than an apple PC, so that is most likely why.

I had a question, if he checks this window, might just have to PM him...

What distros do you recommend?

When I've played with linux, I've used Ubuntu just because its easy to get support but I was wondering if there was something you felt was superior to the others. (Theres so many )

I personally like Ubuntu... if you don't like the Gnome desktop environment you could also try Kubuntu. Ubuntu isn't out of the box nice looking, but if you mess around with it a bit you can get it looking awesome.

Other than Ubuntu, I like Linux Mint and Dreamlinux.

Linux Mint is what I use, also a really cool one is Puppy Linux, its really tiny and only needs 93MB, runs in RAM and off a USB stick, yet still has a GUI and programs like Firefox!

I've been using Linux for a few years now. openSuse is superior to Ubuntu IMHO. Not exactly a go with the flow comment but I've used both for quite some time. One thing I really like about Suse is the YaST tool.

Ubuntu is quick and easy to get up and running but is nowhere near as polished as openSUSE.

If you want to try a distro that has everything but the kitchen sink as part of it's default installation, try Sabayon. A Gentoo based distro that has all the multimedia codecs and graphics drivers as part of the installation. While this is a fun distro, I wouldn't recommend it to people new to Linux.

Fedora IMO has the best community support bar none. Unfortunately, Fedora still doesn't have it's act together with conflicting repos.

:)

Yup! Linux Mint is nice (I prefer Ubuntu though), but I don't like Puppy... it doesn't work with a lot of software.

I like OpenSuSE, but I've never managed to get it to connect to my wifi... Ubuntu, on the other hand connects out of the box.

I love Ubuntu. It always seems to break though. I don't even do anything wrong. On any computer that I load it on it always tells me that it can't boot due to an MBR problem or something. There are various problems. Maybe I'm just special. :)

I just installed Xubuntu on my PS3 and must say that, as my first foray into Linux, it was an easy install and I like it more than OSX and if it weren't for a couple things (games) I would totally use it over Windows. I will soon be making a cheap media PC and I will definitely be using Linux.

That stinks... I haven't had that problem.

I'm going to tri boot Vista Ultimate x64, XP and the latest Ubuntu distro. I'm installing XP on my main rig, atm. After that, I'm gonna install Ubuntu.

As a computer tech, I get to see a lot of different systems and what they are used for. En mass, most people just check their email, go to websites, and manage some pictures. Linux would work well for those types of people. I know many are used to using Windows, but thats only due to a level of comfort. If they could understand they can do everything they did before and be more secure than they were (most of the jobs I do is Virus removal) then I believe its worth a little bit of confusion while learning the new OS. Hell, most people don't even really understand Windows and how to accomplish tasks.

You know what, that is so true, I agree with you completely; Linux is basically good for everything except games, I'm using Linux Mint right now, which worked straight out of the box, unlike Windows, in which I had to install a lot of drivers & programs. And yes security is such a bonus in Linux, the only problem is lack of financial backing; it just can't compete with a big marketing budget.

deffinitly like linux over windows (save the games) and to confront the question no windows is not worth the money
