Is YouTube caching video views

Hi,

we all notice this but we dont talk about it. Any time you refresh a youtube video the views counter does not change even if the video is Gangnam Style right.

Does YouTube cache view count for each video to reduce the server load?

I mean does youtube / google really need to save computing power on that. Youtube does many more, much more power consuming things than doing a fresh view count each refresh of a page.
 
Yeah, I mean I don't know the technical details of it but it makes sense when you consider that certain videos get millions of hits a day. YouTube is massive, over a years worth of content uploaded and 4 billion page views every single day. I would imagine anything that lightens the load of a page view, no matter how little, makes a big difference in the long run.

Keep in mind youtube doesn't receive a trivial amount of traffic. It's one of the busiest sites out there. Gangnam style has averaged 82 views a second since it was posted in July. Thin khow many times the video view count field would have to be selected out of their database if it were always live and the transactional nightmare updating it would be. It only makes sense to
