ISP is not the first hop, possible man in the middle

I think I'm having some kind of man in the middle attack going on or something. I did a traceroute and the first hops goes all the way to some IP address in New Jersey (I'm in Texas) instead of going to my local ISP which is the second hop? Is someone hacking my internet service provider and rerouting all my traffic through them or is some kind of agency screening me??? All I know is that its pissing me off, because I'll get lag at certain times, because of me being rerouted across the country. wtf

this is unlikely.

how are you tracerouting? using command line? or using some sort of tool/program, if using a tool or program they may be routing it through there servers as it is a request, have you tried using a whois lookup to find out who owns the ip?

The first hop should always be your router ip, something like 192.168.1.x then it shows an ip from my isp which is around 800 kilometers away from where i am sitting atm.
