ISP software necessary???

Hi all,

I'm moving to a new apartment and decided to go with Optimum Online for my internet service. Optimum will install the lines in a few days. They said I have to install their software on a computer as part of the installation.

Is there anyway around that? I will not be bringing my desktop. We'll be on 4 laptops.

Is there anyway to get the cable modem/router installed (running) without having to install the software from Optimum?

The reason I don't want to install the software is because I want to keep my laptop as clean as possible. I do not need an e-mail acct from them. I do not need their firewall (as I have my own personal software firewall and the router will have its own firewall).

Let me know what you guys think. I understand I need to create an account & password to have access to the service, but can that be done online?

If I do install their software to create the account & password, can I delete the software after that's done?

It depends on what the software actually does.

You said a computer, so I guess you could put the software on a different laptop?

What sort of connection is it? If it's DSL, you may need their software. I've only used cable. Every ISP I've ever dealt with just comes to your house and installs the modem, using your browser only to check the connection. I even went and picked the modem up myself one time from Grande Communications and installed it myself because I didn't want to wait three days for the cable man. They were cool with it.

Even if you have to have it installed on your computer, it's not going to slow it up so long as you disable any processes that may run on startup via msconfig.
 
with my DSL all i used to do was setup the router manualy with all the settings (i used to get them by phoning my isp)

mine was a little more complicated as i had to configure a static ip etc but once you do that its all good

if your isp only requires your login details username/password then its easy, plug your router into your pc access the control panel for the router add your info then off you go

depends on your setup really because if its usb modem then thats different
