issue or upgrade??

whenever i turn on my computer (everytime i turn it on) my cpu usage soars up and stays that way for about 2 minutes. its like my computer is straining to open all of the necessary starting programs. and also whenever i open limewire or winamp or any other program my cpu usage soars up for quite awhile. my computer has 512 ram so i didnt think i needed to upgrade because that should be good enough for normal usage. i would say the only thing that i do that would even take up that much, if any, cpu is downloading music or winamp. i know its not a virus because i have ran hijackthis and i have mcafee so im sure its not a virus. does anyone know whats wrong. its also really annoying because whenever i pull up winamp my music would stutter alot until the cpu usage went back down to/around 0%, which takes about a minute or two.

oh i already got rid of limewire a long time ago but it has been doing that ever since i took the computer out of the box. ive tried this thread before and it didnt turn out like i expected. i have a few virus scans and ive ran hijackthis and nothing has come up. i just think its the computer. the computer came with two 256 rams and the processor is 2.56 i think.

i have no idea whats wrong because my other computer is much much older with 384mb of ram and a processor of 804 mhz.

Andy, 512 of RAM is kinda a small amount but what kind of processor are you running that will make a difference on what amount of the CPU even the most basic processes will take up..

exactly as it says in the System properties:

Dell Dimension DE051
Intel(R)
Celeron(R) CPU 2.53 GHz
2.53 GHz, 512MB of RAM

ive been told from numerous people that 512mb should be enough for just internet use, and music, and whatnot.

the cpu usage isnt up the whole time im using winamp or vlc.

It may be because you have a Celeron. They are notoriously bad for just about anything, but i would try defragging your HDD anyways, just in case.

this is a pretty new computer, in case i havent said it. i bought it awhile ago but because i currently dont have wireless internet i dont really use it unless i carry it all the way downstairs to hook it up via ethernet cable, which was jsut a few times. and i bought the same computer as my friend and his work just fine. but i guess not all processors are made the same..

changing my processor isnt an option. so any other ideas?

I would do a disk clean up then defrag first. And the programs that you dont need to start with windows go into there settings and uncheck start with windows

umm i noticed that everytime i pulled up winamp, for the first few seconds-minutes, my music would be pretty skippy and stuttering. so i looked at the task manager and found a few programs would run, when i pull up a program, that had to do with McAfee. i guess they sorta scan it when its pulling up for any viruses or whatnot. so i tried something out and closed out of mcafee and found that winamp and other programs loaded faster.

is this a good idea, since its there to try to prevent anything happening to my computer.. i guess for now ill just close out mcafee since i dont have internet access on that computer just yet.. i cant get a virus without internet, can i?
