You Cannot Play a DVD-RW or a DVD+RW Disk by Using Windows Media Player or Sonic CinePlayer
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814846)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to play a DVD-RW or a DVD+RW disk by using either Windows Media Player or Sonic CinePlayer from Sonic Solutions, you may receive the following error message:

The DVD key exchange for copy protection has failed. Playback is not possible.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when Copy Protection for Recordable Media (CPRM) is enabled for the DVD-RW or the DVD+RW disk, but the disk is not encrypted. The DVD component that is used to play back the DVD-RW or the DVD+RW disk tries to start an encrypted session, and it is unsuccessful because the disk is not encrypted.

Is this similar to your problem?

dvd-roms DO have region codes.

They can be changed 3 times, i believe.

Just right click the drive, and go to properties, i believe.

Try google'ing cccp and install it then use mpc also set your regional settings to japanese if you're mounting in daemon or alcohol 120

please listen to me. I have two solutions.

1) go here www.videolan.org and download their sotftware. It will play back just about anything, even PAL format

2) Get a copy of dvd shrink and rip a copy of the DVD as region free to your HD then burn it back to DVD. I used to get lots of kung fu films from HK directly and cheaply and I used that method to rip them so my DVD player would play them.

Also, please completely ditch windows media player. It sucks, requires tons of codecs to be functional, and its a resource hog.
