my dear johnmb,

i don't have a problem. johnmb, i have run 5 security programs and no problems are detected.
johnmb, i can fix it myself. johnmb, i don't need help fixing it.

johnmb, i am trying to understand security strategies.

First of all, his username is Johnb35, not Johnmb.

Second, you're running 5 antivirus programs? That's a poor idea as they can all conflict with each other. The same goes for the firewalls. If you run more than one, they'll conflict with each other.

On your computer, they're not. Better use only one firewall program. However, if you mean you have an actual hardware firewall on your network through which all your traffic goes AND a software firewall on your computer, then sure, you've got extra protection (not "double protection", though - they just don't scale like that.)

Oh and do make sure your normal user account does not have administrator rights. This is a very important security "strategy."

I'm starting to think you're trolling...

hi voyagerfan99, good to hear from you;)

thanks for the advice: ok, that solves that, 1 firewall then.

you said something about running multiple antivirus programs.
so how many antivirus programs should you run at the same time, 1?

hackapelite, hello bro, i'm glad you made it:)

yea i just recently heard about the hardware and software firewalls, but it still wouldn't be twice the protection, huh, only about ~120%...
okay. well that answers that question.

oh, i'm glad your here, you are just the person that i wanted to ask about this, because i'm still trying to figure this out.
so if you create 2 accounts -- one being a normal user account and the other being a administrator account; and you install all your programs under the administrator account, but only operate the computer under the normal user account then it doesn't matter whether your still in the normal user account because the programs were installed in the administrator account and so they have administrator account access, right, to change your computer?

is this how you do it? or install all programs in the normal account and always use the normal account, but you still have two accounts, the second being an administrator account?

Yes only run one anti virus program, and I really wouldn't bother with some sort of 'third party' firewall. Windows Firewall is enough. Just don't download any old crap you find on the internet or open spam email attachments and I think you'll be fine.

When you install programs with an administrator account, a 'restricted' user (which you refer to as a normal user) will be able to run those programs, but without administrator privileges. They also will not be able to install or uninstall programs.

It's good that you are concerned about all of this and want to keep yourself safe, but I can't help but feel that you may just be over-thinking this. Take a deep breath and relax.

The privileges and restrictions a program runs under depend on the user running the program, not the user that installed the program, so yes, you install as admin and run as normal user and the program will not have unlimited access to the system.

hey spirit:)

i really appreciate all that you have done for me bro!
i consider you a friend. thank you.

this thread has been solved.

hi ya hackapelite:D

i just want to thank you for your advice. you have helped me. thanks a lot man! hackapelite, you are my friend.

[i can fix my computer myself] so far i'm up to 10 security programs that i have run so far, not at the same time, one at a time, for anti virus, anti malware, and anti rootkit, and there is still an error. it is virtually undetected. i just wan--

Why did you run so many programs?

Because of the ten running programs you saw on another thread?

I have read many of your threads and it sounds like your paranoia of hackers and viruses is causing you to harm your system more than a hacker would.

I have a couple of computers here that I run with no anti-virus and only the firewall built into the router and they have never been hit.

+1

As long as you're careful, you don't have to worry about viruses at all. You can install something like Avast to give you peace of mind, but no more.
