John's Got GPU Problems

So was on youtube earlier watching videos and I lost video input to my monitor. Was listening to my case and realized that it was quieter then normal. Checked the fans on the video card and they weren't running. Actually they run for a second or so and then shut off for a few seconds and then kick back on for a second and shut off. I've already opened a support ticket on Sapphiretech for my R9 380. I don't have another high enough wattage power supply to test my aging tx650, even though its only about 5 to 6 years old. I just bought this card back in July so its not even a year old yet.

This is totally normal, at least the fan part. In order to reduce noise a lot of the 300 series AMD GPU's have the fans completely off at idle until usually 60 oC. If you want it run at idle then you can use Afterburner and set a custom fan curve. My 390 sits right at the mid to upper 40's with the fans at about 25%, which is no louder than it being off entirely over the rest of my machine. I never disabled the fan feature though and mine stay on. I know my roommate with a Sapphire R9 380 sits pretty warm at idle and probably has the fans off until 60 as well. I'd need to check.

Edit: Yeah he does. The card has two vBIOS and the other might have a more aggressive fan curve built in if you wanted to try that.

What drivers are you on and how are temps at idle/load? The loss of video is a bit odd though. Might be a bit overzealous power saving features. AMD seems to be exploring a lot of power saving functionality in their newer drivers which is good but it can cause some problems at times.

ROL:
7990 is sold. Again. But this time I sold it for $590 somehow...? I think the guy is a BitCoin miner as he sold a mining machine last year worth a few grand. I'd hazard a guess he knows how to install GPU's though. Hopefully I'm finally done with that disaster. Since I got $200 more out of it the second time around I'm not too bothered about it though. :D

My fans were always running though, could always hear them running. So something is just not right now. I didn't change any settings, something just went wrong.

I have a different video card in right now. I'll put it back in later and check them.

I'd be really surprised if the card is bad. Likely some power saving stuff going on or driver quirks, maybe dying PSU but I kinda doubt it. There have been a lot of changes in the past several months with how their drivers work so I'm wondering if you got a pushed driver update that changed something. For simplicity's sake I've just turned off any and all power saving stuff with my card and it seems to have helped even up the performance a bit. A full clean driver installation with DDU and latest Crimson Drivers probably isn't a bad idea if you haven't done it manually in a while. The auto update function doesn't seem to be terribly up to speed with beta drivers.

Just checked latest update history and nothing was update yesterday or today. So something is definitely up with the card or power supply. I'm guessing its the card.

You might have malware on your system.

Follow these steps and post the result:

1. AdwCleaner
2. Junkware Removal tool
3. Malwarebytes

I will post specific instructions for each program later in this post.

For the more tougher malware issues, such as mbr/bootkit infections and browser redirect infections we must use stronger programs.

1. TDSSkiller
2. ASWmbr
3. Combofix - NOTE: Should only be ran when told to do so by a Moderator.

So if you come here looking for help to remove malware on your system, we would appreciate it if you would go ahead and follow steps 1-4 outlined below and we will determine if any more scans are needed to get you cleaned up.

1.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.

•Please close all open programs and internet browsers.
•Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
•Click on Scan.
•After the scan you will need to click on clean for it to delete the adware.
•Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
•Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
•You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

2.

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

•Shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts.
•Very important that you run the tool in this manner:
Right-mouse click JRT.exe and select Run as administrator
Do NOT just double-click it.
•The tool will open and start scanning your system.
•Please be patient as this can take a while to complete.
•On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
•Post the contents of JRT.txt in your next message.

3.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Please post the log that Malwarebytes displays on your screen.

4.

Download OTL to your Desktop

•Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
•Click on Minimal Output at the top
•Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
◦When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL. Just post the OTL.txt file in your reply.

So in your original thread asking for help, please give us a short description of what the problem is and then post the logs from the following 4 programs.

1. Adwcleaner
2. Junkware removal tool
3. Malwarebytes
4. OTL

Just checked latest update history and nothing was update yesterday or today. So something is definitely up with the card or power supply. I'm guessing its the card.

What actual driver version are you on? The fan thing is downright normal behavior.

God Dammit Tim. WTF!!!

:D

It's not even inside windows and the fan is turning off and on constantly. I really believe its an issue with the card.

The fan profile is built into the BIOS of the card, wouldn't this be running as soon as it gets power even outside of Windows? Is it just no video at all now?

But as I said, the fan would run constantly no matter what anyway until it quit yesterday. I'll hook it up back up today hopefully to see if its still doing the same thing. I got a reply from Sapphire last night saying I needed to email a copy of my newegg invoice for rma, which I sent last night. Waiting on their reply now.

Still want to know your temps and driver version. I have a roommate with identical card so I can probably give you some insight.

Ok, so I just put my 380 back in my system and turned it on. The fans would spin, turn off, spin, turn off, spin turn off and stay off. Booted into windows and downloaded afterburner and changed the fan speed. Fan speed was on auto so I turned it off and moved the slider bar up to 30 percent. Fans would spin, stop, spin, stop continously and never getting up to full speed. Moved it to 35 percent and the fans were going constantly but barely moving. Moved it to 40 percent and the fans went faster like it should be the default speed.

I don't know what to think. I received the rma yesterday so what do I do? Once I switch it back to auto then the fans stop and don't turn on. I may try using the system and see if the fans turn on while playing one of my fps games.

Yes, they spin by hand. I'm downloading one my games now to see if they turn on when set to auto.

Like, forever, or like do they shit out quickly as opposed to spinning freely :P

Usually you see that kind of behavior when the resistance of the fan increases and you need more power/voltage to overcome it.

When you spin them with your finger, they spin for a couple seconds and then stop. I played a game and they turned on. Now I'm idle and they stopped spinning again. I just don't get this though. The fans would always spin no matter what. Now they don't. Is this an issue with the card or did the cards bios get updated somehow?

I'm gonna reply to them and see what they think.

I think your fine. If your temps are fine at idle and it works fine for gaming there's no harm no foul.

WHAT DRIVER ARE YOU ON
