Just ADDING a SATA HD speeds boot?

I recently acquired a 120gb sata drive I'm giving to my little brother. I had it hooked up in my rig so I could partition it and put some rom images on it. The weird thing is, my computer seemed to be booting up really quick lately. The scrolling blue bars during windows xp pro boot sequence passed by once, maybe one and a half times. Now that I've disconnected the drive, my computer seems to be taking 30 seconds longer(seven more scrolls) to boot.(Which feels like what I was used to before I added the drive.)


Okay, I'm lost other than the fact that maybe since I have my SATA drivers loaded, Windows is taking 30 seconds to look for a SATA drive?

So, any ideas why my computer booted so much faster when I had the SATA drive installed?

That's my only sata drive, and I've hooked it up once and left it there for about a week now. I have installed a sata drive once before for a backup though, so that's why i even bothered installing the drivers. I just disabled sata on my board and in device manager and there is no change.

Any ideas? I'm willing to work on it right now, I still have the drive.
 
Just to help isolate this I repeated things by enabling sata on the board and in the bios and installing the sata drive. Speedy boot. I don't know why! The blue bars scroll across 1 and a half times with the sata drive installed, without it , they scroll across 11 times! Please help! I wanna figure this out.
 
Are you booting off the SATA or you just have it in there? and what is the speed of the drive you normally use?
 
Their could be many things that lead to this, but id have to say one of the 2 below...
1. it could be just that the SATA connection being faster than PATA
2. it could be solower because of fragmeted files, 200 gb is a big hdd, lots of fragemented files, I know mine is a 300 gb sata and always has lots of framgented files
 
I'm not booting from the sata drive. The sata drive doesn't even have an OS! It's just a few partitions with a few game ISOs.
 
New update:

I am now booting from the SATA drive and the PATA drive is in another computer. The boot speed is the same as before with just the PATA drive. So does anyone know why running PATA and SATA would speed up the boot time so much?
