Just Formated And Reinstalled Windows..Having Some Issues

im running windows xp service pack 3 on a dell e510

i formatted my drive and reinstalled windows cause i had a stupid unrelated issue that i couldnt get rid of

so i got all my programs and settings back to how i like it but now i dont know if its the pc or the display but it seems laggy like if im firefox and i hit my desktop shortcut icon in the quicklaunch when it brings me to desktop its like a stutter and theres some white flash before i eventully get there yes its all in a matter of seconds and not a total lock up but its lag even if i drag a small window back and forth across the desktop it will have that trail of white lag even right clicking on something seems to have a lag...its most noticeable anytime i reduce a window or close a window


im not sure what the problem is here..im open to answering all questions to help me solve this matter i did not have this issue before i formatted

to add to my post..it just seems like a good deal of overall lag and im not sure why..all the same programs i had previously

You need to install video card and monitor drivers. What kind of pc do you have? prebuilt/oem or custom? If it's prebuilt check the manufactures site for drivers, otherwise, what's the brand and model of your video card?

I already did that as soon as I was done reinstalling wondows both video and monitor drivers video card is ati radeon x-600 256mb hypermemory
 
seems like an awful lot of software, alot of programs that do the same thing, media players etc, do you use them all if not try cutting down the installed software i.e. having one program for one job like one media player one browser etc, and use your msconfig to keep your startup items to minimum, and shut down any needless services.
 
Did you use the cd that came with the dell or did you download the latest from ati's website? You should always download the latest from the website. If you did then, try downloading a earlier driver for it.
 
all the software i have installed serves a purpose and before i formatted when i didnt have this problem i had even more installed

i downloaded drivers from dells site..then i tried drivers from ati but couldnt find the exact one i needed but nothing has helped so far still have the same issue
 
i formatted again and things seem ok overall but i still have that flicker its not pronounced when theres no desktop wallpaper but as soon as i put wallpaper i have it bad..i had my computer for 5 years without this issue i just installed the the ati driver from there site no difference i have the monitor driver installed as well no difference

there has to be a reason for this happening im using the same programs i always have..on the 2nd format i installed less programs

so can anyone help me figure out why all the sudden i cant use wallpaper with out a display lag

Try disabling all programs from starting up using the msconfig configuration utility. It's possible that a program or process in memory is causing the issue. If it still don't work, then I would reinstall windows one more time, but this time use this procedure.

1. install windows
2. install all required drivers
3. setup your wallpaper and see if it behaves properly.
4. if it works okay start installing programs one by one and retest
wallpaper
5. If it doesn't work right, then most likely you have hardware failure, most likely the video card

1. install windows
2. install all required drivers
3. setup your wallpaper and see if it behaves properly.
4. if it works okay start installing programs one by one and retest
wallpaper
5. If it doesn't work right, then most likely you have hardware failure, most likely the video card

besides doing that..is there a good way to test my video card before doing all of that to if thats the cause..how can i test if its failing or having problems
 
There really is no way to test a video card. It either works correctly or it doesn't.
 
so i seemed to have fixed that one lag issue with a windows tweak program

so right now that issue is gone the one involving wallpaper..but otherall compared to before format the pc is still slightly sluggish like one example is say i have my documents folder open and i minimize that and leave it there for 10-15 min and then click on it in the taskbar to maxamize theres a stutter/delay before it comes back up

this never happened before format..any idea what could be causing it now all the sudden im using the same programs now less then i was on both before format and first format

any tweaks or settings that can be changed to possibly fix this
 
Sounds like you need to change the monitors refresh rate to the highest it can go (that is supported by the monitor)

i have a question about that..what happens if in the monitor settings you uncheck the hide supported refresh rates and select a rate that is not there when the box is checked like

any negative effects that can come from this?
 
Well it most likely won't work! Always have that box checked and then select the highest one from the list that's there. If all else fails select 60Hz.
