Hello, i just recieved a laptop from my uncle and need some help getting started,i have done some research on the net, but there are so many choices and things i dont understand.

Things i know..its a Dell d600..system says 1400mhz,then and mhz field that changes from 500-1400mhz, and 680m of ram and a 20 g harddrive, is this outdated or ok to use for school/internet purposes.....

i know i need a couple things and if i could get some suggestions on where/what model/price range to look for i will be very grateful

wireless capability. there is a slot on the side on the computer that has a plastic dell insert in it which i m assuming is a spot for a wirelss card? would i just need to buy a card for this and plug it in to get connected?

cd/rom drive so i can read and burn cds, anyone where to get one compatible and cheap?

sound card , i dont think i have sounds access, when i try to open a sample media files it says no sounds card installed, where would this be located and if i needed one just to listen to mp3s with where should i go

and finally a recharger for the battery, anyone know what model i need so i can recharge the battery?

thanks so much for help advice help given, im really excited about getting this thing up and running just need some help..thanks to all who pitch in!

it will be just fine for web surfing and doing school work. as for wireless, youll need a wireless card and a router (if you dont already have one). linksys and belkin make good stuff. youll probally do fine with a wireless b or wireless g router and card or usb adapter. as for cd writing you will just need to get an external usb burner, which can usually be picked up pretty cheap. for sound, you can get a pcmcia sound card (which is the slot for a wireless card, if you get this, you can get a usb wireless adapter). and for a charger, i would just give dell a call and ask them. hopethat helps you out some, if you need any links or suggestions on anything, just ask.

is 1400mhz the same as 1.4 ghz?...also what is the second mhz display in my system properties.....if i put a sound card into that slot where will the wireless go?..the usb wireless you speak of, do i just plug it in and go to a coffee shop or bookstore?..or do i need one of those boxes with the antenaes..wow i must sound retarded, but enlighten me please!...is there a soundcard/wireless card in one that i could put in the pcmia(?) slot?

1st ?- yes 1400mhz=1.4Ghz.
2nd ?- does it look like this?

3rd ?- if you want to have wireless internet at your home, then you need a router or one of those boxes with the antennas on it. but yes it will work at the coffee shop, bookstore, airport, ect. as long as there is a wireless network there.

4th ?- the PCMCIA slot is the one where you can put in a wireless card or sound card or any PCMCIA card

yea the screen looks exactly like that...whats the second mhz filed, it changes all the time.....also, what is i want a sound card and a wireless card and only have one slot?..thanks so much..i will now be refering to antanae box as a router, ha

The first speed is what it's rated for, and the second speed is what it's currently running at.

If you need both a sound card and a wireless card and only have one slot, the you would either need to decide which one is most important to you, or if you have USB ports you can buy external wireless cards or an external sound card.

My guess is drivers got deleted or corrupted. Do you have recovery cd for the lappy-maybe see if you can d/l from Dell. Hard to picture a laptop without some kind of sound card/intergrated.

Here is what I know...

WIRELESS-just buy a wireless card and router if your network isnt wireless yet. then just follow the instructions from the drivers disk.

CD-ROM: All good PC shops have these accessories, pc world, curries...

SOUND CARD-If your laptop doesnt have a soundcard, there are two ways to go around the problem-1:download.... and 2: call up the manufacturers for information.

I have the exact same laptop running at 1400mhz but mine has intergrated wireless and works fine for browsing but if you have a lot of software that you have set to start when you boot, it is a bad choice. Otherwise it is a good laptop.

Go to System Properties by opening WIndows Explorer and right-click on My Computer. Go to Hardware tab>Hardware Manager. If there are any question marks, you are missing some drivers.
