Just Received Linux Mint 15 Mate ....

...the disc just came in the mail. Being as that I couldn't activate the Windows Xp disc due to no product key, I will not be having a dual os. When I put in the Linux do I let it take off on it's own (it came with no instructions)? Will it automatically overwrite the Wxp install that will expire anyway? Do I need to change the boot sequence, pull out the wifi adapter first, or anything else beforehand?
 
You need to press F12 to enter the boot menu. Once the menu appears insert the CD into the drive and select Internal CD/DVD Drive. The disc will boot. Select Run Linux Mint 15. Once it loads, click on the install button on the desktop and simply follow the instructions.
 
something stuck ?

installed the disc but it seems to have stopped in the process of loading....the "Install (as superuser)" map remains on the screen with five green dots at the bottom, however I am online now....I can use YouTube ok, really like the lay-out much better than the Wxp.
Should I just leave the Linux disc in and leave the computer on? Will it finish up it's job? I thought the process only took about 25 minutes....hope I didn't jump the gun by going online prematurely
 
Once it fully installs it'll need to reboot Otherwise anything you do on the machine won't be saved.
 
Reboot the computer and restart the installation procedure. It shouldn't take as long as it seems to be taking for you. Did you completely go through the install wizard?
 
When you clicked on the install icon you should have went through several steps through the installer. Once you completed the steps you should have seen a series of slides with a progress bar at the bottom. Once complete the box should have closed and said a restart is needed which would have given you a button to restart. If this did not happen or maybe you didn't notice this you can restart the computer and if it says no OS present then you did not complete the installation. Reinsert the disc, turn the machine off and power it back on to get back into the installer.

You are not meant to keep booting to disc, once you finish the install and you restart the machine remove the disc so it does not keep booting to disc, just like Windows you are meant to boot from your hard drive.

If you keep having problems we will continue to help, trust me you will get through this and once you have done it once any other time will seem like a breeze.

yes, something got jammed up and I had to pull the plug on the machine and re-install the Linux. I got it installed fully this time but now I can't access the internet thru wifi !!! Before I was actually online...I hear of others having the same difficulty...do I need to type some code into the terminal?

open the menu and find "Additional Drivers" and make sure all the proprietary drivers are installed being that the Wifi might require those

well, I sort of did that to the best of my knowledge but it didn't seem to do much ( I have to run back & forth between my computer and the librarys to connect with you guys)...when I get home I will check that again...anything else I should check on?

the Driver Manager states: No Proprietary Drivers Are in use
--where do I go from here?

A guy at the osdisc.com company said I should have ordered Linux mint 15 cinnamon 64 bit, rather than Linux mint mate 15...maybe I'll just exchange the disc for that one...what do you think? Does it have better wifi capabilities?
 
It's the same thing. It's just a different visual interface.

Why don't you just download the ISO instead of ordering a disc?

I had to reinstall my Wxp disc so I could get back online....can you give me the link to download the cinnamon version? Will it install to a partion? or Erase the Wxp?

You can install it along XP. You can either burn it to a DVD or use the Yumi multi-boot (downloadable HERE) to put it on a flashdrive to install it.
