Just Received Linux Mint 15 Mate ....

You can install it along XP. You can either burn it to a DVD or use the Yumi multi-boot (downloadable HERE) to put it on a flashdrive to install it.

http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php[/QUOT then I need to purchase a device known as a 'flash drive'? Which type? I don't believe I can burn anything on this trap.
Does the computer boot from that so I can leave the Wxp intact to keep online until I get this resolved?

As long as the computer has a USB you can make a USB Drive or also known as a thumb drive bootable. Just use the links provided from voyagerfan99 and if you have issues let us know. Now as for leaving XP in tact, as we talked about way earlier on when you go to install Linux Mint one of the questions you have to answer during the install is how you want it to install to the HDD, there will be a option which all you have to do is click on it telling the installer to install Linux Mint along side Windows. Then when the installation is complete and you restart and every time you reboot the computer will ask you whether you want to boot into Linux Mint or Windows and you just select one.

now I have these two things on "My Documents"--Linuxmint 15 cinnamon dvd 32 bit ISO file and Linux mint 15 cinnamon dvd 32 bit part file but nothing happens when I click on them :-(

Nothing is going to happen when you click them. They're ISO files. You need to either burn them to a DVD or flashdrive then boot to the drive you burned them to.

ok, that's what I have been getting at--what type,kind,brand,etc. of flash drive do I need--32gb, 8GB,16GB ???

flash drive in hand...

Now that I have my 8GB flash drive what do I do next ? One of these files has 0KB the other 599,595KB...does that sound logical? Why would one have 0KB?

All you need to do is run the tool. It's self explanatory.

P.S. You're not supposed to download the Yumi creator to the flashdrive, as you need to format the drive. Make sure it's saved to your desktop and then run it.

Now reboot and boot to the flashdrive and install Linux.

I get a screen at F12 with a penguin Yumi Multiboot usb...with two selections "continue to boot etc" and "linux distributions etc" and when I click on either I get the black screen with booting error...something's amiss...

You should be able to click the Linux Distributions then select Linux Mint. If it isn't working, boot back into Windows and run the Yumi installer again, being sure to format the flashdrive.

I changed the boot sequence to boot from the usb and get the same Yumi screen and click on linux distributions but just get another blue box that says same thing with arrow with back to main menu...maybe I need to re-download the linux cinnamon version again ?
**Now I get the blue box after boot with linux-mint-16-cinnamon-dvd-32 bit (2)
but at the bottom it says 'No default or UI configuration directive found!'
