hi
i am a complete newbi and have just finished putting together my first build which i have always wanted to do, the dummies books were designed for me. i have just turned the power on and nothing has exploded, the green light on the motherboard comes on and all the fans are working. my monitor is plugged in and that's fine. i am at a loss what to do next during boot up it says no hard drive is detected, and there is not sound, if there is supposed to be at this stage.in what order do things come next. do i install the motherboard cd before the OS is installed. my system is as follows.
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 LGA775 "Kentsfield" 2.66GHz (1066FSB) - OEM
Asus ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express)
Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Corsair VX 550W ATX Power Supply (CMPSU-550VXUK)
Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD5001AALS)
Pioneer DVR-216DBK 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM
as far as the hard drive is concerned i have checked the 2 cables (power and data and i think they are in the right sockets (sata 1 and 2 ). can anyone advice me, bearing in mind the first couple of lines
thanks in advance

sounds like you plugged it in right with the one power chord and one sata. can you here it spinning when you turn on the computer?

hi
thanks for your quick reply. no i cant hear it spinning all i can hear is the fans.
what is the 8 pin socket next to the power and data connections on the hard drive. also on the psu cable where there are 3 connections i am using the bottom one. just thought I'd mention it.

use the sata and then the power connector on the left which kinda looks like a larger sata. thats one you need to hook up

kudos, what he said...it happened to me when i was puttin mine together last week...also jus double check everything carefully, no need to rush.

hi
thanks for all the replies, i am at this moment installing windows xp. just one question is it best to install all the drivers on the motherboard cd, i take it there's nothing there i need not install.

Go to your motherboard manufacturers website and download the latest drivers from there, that way when you update drivers you dont have to uninstall the old out of date ones off your cd;)

Those are your jumper pins, no need to go messing with them. :D

hi
so far so good, i have installed windows xp but there are still a few small problems. the main one is i have no sound even though i have installed realtec audio drivers. thanks in advance

hi

download all the drivers frm the manufacturers website, they would be more updated than the one thats on the cd. or you can always use the cd then upgrade them afterwards but thats just more work for you ;)

It's apparently working wherever you have it plugged in at so I would so you don't need to worry about that. As for the sound, what type of speakers are you setting up? If the speakers only have one green connector then make sure you've got it plugged into the green audio jack on the mobo.

hi
this is going to sound pretty dumb, here's me thinking because the sound is on board i didn't realize i needed speakers. any you can recommend a cheap good pair will do. thanks

If you just need a cheap pair, run to an electronics store and get their cheapest model. No sense in waiting on shipping and stuff for such a small part, know what I mean?

hi
has anyone installed the applications in the utilities menu on the support dvd that came with the following motherboard, are they worth installing
Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
thanks
