Keep it or toss it?

I have a pentium 4 processor that i took from a Compaq computer that was given to me. I'm going to use the stock case, fans, and power supply for now. I have a seagate 37gb 10k HD. The processor is a Pentium 4 SL5UW 1.6ghz/256/400. I also have the Mobo and everything else that comes from a stock compaq. Should i start from scratch with the CPU or keep this one? Is it any good at all? Would i be better of spending the money and getting a new CPU? This computer is going to be used for multitasking, surfing, and the usual. Nothing over the top. Some gaming but nothing out of the ordinary. thoughts? This processor is old but should i keep it and just replace the board?

Um... OK, you have a 1.6G P4 and then what? You have one in the Compaq as well? Is this other any faster, slower? Are they even using the same socket? As for the Segate, you know that's SCSI, right(or I don't know any other drives that size/speed besides Western Digital Raptors) That would be a fine drive for a machine, you just need the controller. And how about RAM?

As for building a computer, you still have some loose ends with your info provided, but it should make a decent machine. I'd certinally suggest getting a new one if you can afford it, but there's also no reason to just trash these parts. Just don't think that the old P4 1.6GHz is anywhere near the performace lebel of the current 1.6GHz processors.

Well, the compaq that it was in was stripped. I figured it isn't JUNK but i'm better off spending the loot and getting something else. I had my eye on a pentium d 820. Figured this would be better. What is SCSI? What's the difference? I should probably look into HD101. The current chip is a 478. It's still sitting in the MoBo right infront of me since i was doing some research. I have no comparison to any thing else other then this family e-machine i'm on. I haven't had any problems with it. But it isn't a speed demon by any means.

PARTS THAT WERE STRIPPED:
Pentium 4 478 SL5UW 1.6GHz/256/400
Compaq Mother board -- repalcing.
Maxtor 2B020H1 20gig -- fried.
128MB PC100 CL2 Micron 168-pin 8-chip 16x8 SDRAM DIMM (p/n AJP) --possibly keeping depending on my mobo.
Stock video card --replacing.

SCSI is quite expensive tough,.. i'd stick with SATA drives (SCSI is aminly used in servers,.. but hardly worth the money in a desktop pc imo)
