Key Board Backlight

I recently purchased a new gaming key board for everyday use. I have it plugged into my mac book pro and the backlight does not turn on. However when I plug it into my windows desktop it turns on by pressing a light button. When this button is pressed on my mac it adjusts the screen brightness. Does anyone have any suggestions or know how to reset the keyboard so that it uses the external keyboard keys.

What kind of keyboard is it? I had a similar problem with my keyboard when I first used it on Linux.

What I did was typed "sudo xmodmap -e 'add mod3 = Scroll_Lock'" in the terminal. The scroll lock key is the backlight key in my case.

EDIT: Looks like OSX doesn't use x11 anymore. so my answer doesn't help.
