keyboard & mouse noe connecting

Ok i have a Microsoft wireless multimedia keyboard & a Microsoft wireless optical mouse 2000.
ive installed the drivers an followed the instructions about 20 times now an every time i click the connect button on the receiver it starts searching then i click connect on the keyboard or mouse an it just stops searching all its lights turn off.

plz help me here cos its pissing me off big time cos i have to use some OLD wired keyboard an mouse it it makes me game poorly
 
How fare away are you from the reciever the range could be a problem and if it takes batterys are the batterys fully charged?
