my friend wanted me to solve this problem for her but I didn't know what to say, maybe someone can help?

when she hits the 'g' button the start menu comes up....why does that happen and how can she fix it?

thanks for any and all input!! :)

Sounds like the keyboard is sending the wrong character number to the computer. Try a different keyboard and see if that solves the problem. If that doesn't work, try a USB keyboard (it might be the port, too).

one of my friends spilled coke in my keyboard and for a while every time i pushed the "a" button the computer restarted... man was that frustrating. i took the keyboard apart though and attacked it with rubbing alcohol. if you think you can do that and remember how to put it back together its worth a shot

She may have made the start menu shortcut on that key by accident or whatever. It could be possible..

Something else you could look at.

I guess I might have jinxed it for my friend because the problem is back :( ....if she made one of the keys a shortcut by accident how can she fix it?

To make the START menu popup, I'd say it wasn't an accident, if in fact the G-key was assigned to be a shortcut. That would require an external program that is specifically designed to do that. Probably, she has a defective keyboard that should be replaced.

Either that, or the keyboard controller is doing something funky internally on the motherboard. Sounds like when it boots up the number associations for the different keys are getting scrambled. Try a new keyboard, if that doesn't work, then it might be a little more complicated problem to fix.

update: now not only the 'g' button makes the start menu come up but now when she starts it up the start menu is flashing constantly....before this happened she tried system restore twice with no sucess :( what could possibly be wrong?

---also she's concerned that her laptop may be overheating causing things on her computer to act strangely
