A couple days ago I lost power briefly. My computer was plugged into a surge protector, as always. When the power came back, I noticed that the cursor was randomly going "uuuuuuuu........" in an open window nonstop. So I restarted and my computer made this awful beeping sound upon rebooting. Furthermore, I then noticed that the U key wasn't working at all. I've tried system restore, which worked for about 10 minutes. At one point, the U was working again and instead pushing on the I would produce "iu". Last night I shut my comp down, unplugged everything, and removed the battery. When I put everything back this morning, it worked beautifully...for about 30 minutes and then all hell broke loose again with the U. I was told I "may" need to reformat, but I am reluctant to do that because that alarm/beeping noise I get when I reboot is no longer there and my comp isn't randomly shutting down like it was before.....but to prevent that from happening, I have to use this annoying "on-screen keyboard", because using my real keyboard for an extended period seems to trigger the aforementioned chaos.
Everything else on my computer is working fine. I have a Dell Inspiron 9200 (laptop), thus replacing the keyboard is not really an option. Is there a way for me to fix this? Can I uninstall the keyboard (there's an option in control panel) and reinstall it? Would anyone think reformatting might help? My warranty has expired and I really can't afford to bring it in, so I really hope there is something, anything, I can do!
