Keyboard Problems / Suggestions

I am going to have to give the whole explanation and it will be pretty long, so please just bear with me.

I did a computer upgrade quite a while ago and everything was fine with my keyboard before and shortly after. It seemed everything was going smoothly until I got tired of my current black, Dell, USB keyboard. I usually use the computer at night because I have more free time than I do during the day. And with this keyboard being black, its hard to see which keys I'm hitting, so now I have to go by feeling.

Anyways, about 3 months ago I decided to switch keyboards so i could see the keys better. I turned my computer off, unplugged my current keyboard and plugged in the new one and turned on the computer. It seemed to go alright at first. The lights flashed on it, the Num Lock light came on like it was suppose to. But when the windows login screen came up, the keyboard became completely unresponsive. The Num Lock light even shut off.

The mouse was working fine however. I thought it might have been the login screen itself, shutting off the keyboard for some reason, so I restarted the computer with the dell keyboard plugged in and everything went fine. I logged in, removed my login password to where it would go directly to the desktop upon startup. I restarted the computer with the new keyboard plugged in. The lights flashing showing that it was working, and when it got to the desktop it shut the keyboard down again. Then I thought it may have been the keyboard not being compatible with the PC for some reason.

I grabbed a spare ,standard plugin, keyboard and plugged it in and got the same effect as the last one. I restarted with the Dell keyboard plugged in and had my dad go to the BIOS settings to see if anything could be changed that would help or be causing the other keyboards not to work and he didn't find anything.

I have been looking to get a new Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard for my birthday but I don't want to spend $100 on it and plug it in and it not work. So if someone could help me with this issue, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, I am only 15 years old so if you could put everything step-by-step and not use a lot of technical terms, that'd be nice.

Also would like to add that I have Windows XP Profession SP2 with all current updates.

I found out what the problem was. It seems that the two USB ports in the back are malfunctioning and the only two that work are in the front. So now it seems that all i have to do is find out how to position the keyboard cord. Anyways, thank you for trying to figure out what the problem was. Kind of embarrassed at how simple the problem was and I missed it.
