So I had to boot Knoppix off a CD to recover some files. I do not have access to the internet, therefore I do not have access to our network so I can't copy the files to the network. The HDD is split into 2 partitions, one for backup, the other being the main partition. I cannot copy in either partitions. Says I don't have sufficient access so I can't write anything. What should I do? I really need these files, and I can't boot into Windows. BTW - the partition the files are on is NTFS and I'm running WinXP Pro (err... I was.)

So... how do I copy these files?
 
To write to ntfs, you need ntfs-3g. Knoppix comes with it, or at least, a version of Knoppix does.

Look up your version's documentation.

I know Slax Kill-bill Edition has htfs write support, http://www.slax.org.
 
you can still mount it using the mount command, granted you have ntfs.progs or another open source like 3G utility installed that allows read/write to NTFS partitions.

Other obvious answer is to hook up a FAT32 HD (external or internal) to the system since every OS out there can r-w-x FAT32. The downside is if any files are bigger than 4 gig you are not able to copy them to a FAT32 volume.
