Ok im not sure if this is the right spot for this or not but i was wondering if anyone knew a good way to learn just basic computer knowledge in general. I know basics of hardware but would like to learn basics of software. books best idea???

Read and experiment. For programs like excell and photoshop, there might be local classes for you. If you meant 'how to write' software, yea, i would look for the 'dummies' series at your local shop, then buy them online if it is cheaper.

nah i dont mean programs like that
i have a basic knowledge of microsoft office since i took a class and it isnt really necessary now but more just an understanding of how things work
i suppose i can get a few books probably from the IT guy at my skool
but any other suggestions are appreciated = )
thanks

Get windows 95 or 98 or whatever version you want, install it on a virtual machine (Microsoft Virtual PC can help you here; just google for it) and experiment with it, see what every button does. That's how I did and destroyed a computer by deleting system files (it was using win95), and the second one same way (win98) :). At that time i didn't know how to install windows, so I had to call someone else who was pretty busy and didn't have too much time, so it stayed like that for few months.
In this case, a virtual machine would be good because if you do something stupid you won't kill a system, just a virtual machine :).
