Hi, just to start, heres my system specs.

-Pentium 4 3.0 Gh/z
-Intel D915GAG motherboard
-Kingmax DDR 400 512 (x2)
-nVidia GeForce 7900GS 450M 256MB Pci-E DDR3 dual DTI tv
-450W generic startech.com Model:AP-450x
-nVidia Forceware 93.71 Directx C (latest version)
-Samsung SP0802n 80GB (7200 RPM)

Now to the problem, i use this computer for gaming, and when I'm playing battlefield 2142 (a pretty demanding game) i can only get 20-30 fps and its very frustrating, because i spent a decent amount of money on this system and i dont understand why im lagging like this. I have my video card set to High Performance, my ingame resolution and refresh rate are the same as desktop, i have antialiasing disabled, as well as anisotropic filtering, plus i have most of my ingame settings on low. Even on games like americas army I can get around 80fps but it drops frequently to 25-40. The only thing i can see thats wrong is maybe my motherboard? Also, if i have a CD in my CD drive somtimes I'll hear it get loud and make a weird noise and my computer lags horribly until i take the CD out. Could it be my CD drive? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

are you trying to run BF2142 on the highest settings? if so, try lowering them. it is a very resource hogging game and a lot of top end PC's struggle to handle it.

how about the resolution?? try lowering it too...
i tried playing GuildWars on my laptop and it really lag on 1024x768 resolution... i dropped it to 800x600 (i know my laptop really sucks) and it played fine... by fine i meant there is visible improvement but sometimes when many people happens to be at the same scene, the game still lags...

Do you have 512MB RAM or 1GB? If it's only 512 that could be your problem. That and you have a Pentium 4, but that's not a really terrible CPU.

Even 1 gig of ram at that speed may be the problem. Otherwise looks decent, to little info to diagnose that well.

It may be your CPU,CPU's lag when they run hot.You might want to get a program where it tells you how hot you CPU is running, such as Everest.I know because I have a Pentium D 940,and I had to purchase a after market heatsink and fan. Also does your ram have heat spreaders? When ram gets hot if loses performance, making you lag.I know Pentium 4's run hot around 55 C while idle, and if you have a case where there isn't good air flow they might run very hot!!This makes you lag,and get horrible FPS.
