I realize that it might be a bit of a noob question but anyways...I've got 2 pcs at home, one is connected to my modem/router via ethernet and the other one via the USB dongle. I just got a very nice printer and I would like to be able to share it over network as well as share files. One pc is on win7 and the other on Vista. How do I get started???

P.S. I hate networking :P

few qustions 1st. what kind of router?...the pc that is hooked up with a dongle, do you mean a usb wireless adapter, or something else?...and is your printer hooked up to one of the pc's, or pluged into the router via ethernet?

The printer is plugged into my main pc. I use USB dongle to connect the second pc to network. It is a Belkin Modem/Router.

sorry it took so long to reply. so assuming you havnt gotton it done yet ill do my best to give you instructions.
1) be sure to have all computers on the same workgroup. right click my computer, properties, then on the left pane click advanced systme settings. click on the computer name tab, then click the button that says change. in the box labled workgroup, type in a name, and do this for all the computers you want to share files and the printer, making sure that you name the workgroup the same on all the computers. reboot

2)on the computer the printer is connected to, go into the control panel and click printers. locate the printer that you want to share, and right click it, selecting properties, then select the tab that says sharing. check the box that says "share this printer" and check the box that says "render print jobes on client computer". click apply then ok.

3) on the other computers that arnt hooked up to the printer, go to the control panel and click network and sharing center. on the left pane click view computers and devices. click the computer that your printer is connected to. right click the printer that shows up and select connect. (you may need to install the driver for the printer on each computer.

4) on the computers that arnt directly connected to the printer, go to contro; panel and select printers. right click the printer you have and select "make default printer.

5)try todo a test run on the computer not directly connected to the printer. you may need to select the printer, on the print page from the drop down menu, although probably not.

to share files, do the following.

1)on the computer that has a file/folder/drive that you want to share, right click the desired file and select properties.

2)click the sharing tab, and click the advanced sharing button. select the box that says share this folder, click apply then ok

3)go to the security tab click edit then add. click advanced, then find now. scroll down to the word "everyone". select it then click ok. click ok again then apply then ok.

do this for any file you want to share on which ever pc. when you go to the network and sharing center and select view computers and devices you should see each pc on your network and in your workgroup. clicking on any pc will show you what each is sharing and will be able to access those files. you can make shortcuts to the computers or shared files on your desktop for qiucker access if you would like. hope this helped. if you have any questions ill try and help. let us know if you have success...enjoy

I didnt know someone replied xD Thanks! I'll try it and report here :D

THX again.

Are you requesting an email confirmation when someone replies to a post you made? When you either make a thread or reply to someone, look at the bottom of the screen where you type. You will see thread subscription just change the notification type to instant email notification or you can permanently have it set by going into your user control panel and setting the option there. You need to click on edit options on the left when you click on user cp.

Right. I can see the other computer in Network but it asks me for a password and username when I try to connect. As fas as I know I haven't set one.

On the other computer however I don't see the printer in my devices.

You might have to look up your specific router to figure this out but if there is not a username and password setup then it is probably the default one. This varies from each OEM but mine and my grandmas as well as my inlaws was
Username-Admin
Password-Admin

Just go to the manufacturers website or google your router and you will find it.

If a password has been setup then you will have to reset the router and reconfigure everything all over again as if it were brand new. Again this will be on google or the manufacturers website. Good luck.

I don't think it is router...when I double click on the other computer it asks for a pass and username, it's the same on other computer

Why did you "attempt" to block out your device names? It's not like we can hack into your system knowing it.

Don't know if its been asked yet, but have you made sure that the printer has been set to shared?
