LAN Cables

I was wondering if anyone knows how much the cables typically used for LAN and broadband routers (what are they called again?) can take before needing replacement?

I've heard that bad cables might cause slower download speeds and an unstable connection, so could anyone give me a clue?

E.g. my cable runs through the very tight crack between my door and the floor, and is as such very bent in some places - can the cable take this treatment or should I avoid it?

Also how long does these cables 'live'? Is there any guidelines for replacing them after a specific number of years? I believe that my cables are about 2-3 years old.

Thanks.

Heya

I would not think that the bending of the cable should cause unstable connections. However, that possibility remains. If you bend it too much, it could cause a problem. However, I would attribute it more to hardware issues. I would try changing the cable (they are cheap). They are referred to as UTP cables. They can last for tens of years without any issues at all. You can buy them at the length you require from a specialised shop.

Yes bending or knotting it up will cause a significant decrease in speed. basically it is the weak point in the cable, causes a point for a temperature to increase... and information moving aross 2 different temperature mediums is a change of speed. So it is not good, but if you cant ifx it... Do what you can.
