Lan party questions

Me and some friends are going to start building his outhouse / shed in his garden. We want to have some lan parties.

How would we set it up so all of our computers were linked together?
We want to be able to all get on a lan cod 2 server or maybe a strat game.

If we got something like this \

Could we all just plug our computer into it and be connected. Or would we have to have a separate computer running as server?

We dont necessarily want to use the internet at the moment as ping would be crap.

You set all the computers IP Adresses too the same Bar the last number of the list, (This is if you dont have DHCP Enabled)

Then plug all your computers into the Hub/Switch

N basically

OFF YOU GO.

All the system must be on the same subnet to play Lan games, this is done by setting the TCP/ip properties as K3rupt has said in his post.

I would get a device with DHCP you dont want to start changing IPs on each system when your friends bring them over and then they have to be changed
when they take em back home. they will be calling you when they cant get on the internet from home after your Lan party.
let this be automatic is your best bet.

I agree.

But judging by the sounds of his Network Knowledge, DHCP might be a little out of his range.

Personally, i have a Dedicated server running Windows Server 2003, Giving DHCP, Supporting Multiple websites.

But thats way out what he needs

I seriously think you should get yourself a cheap computer, Set it up with Windows 2003 Server, Set up for DHCP, And your done.

It then can be used to host multiple game servers such as

Halo
Css
GTA SA

And MANY more.

As a dedicated server does NOT have to have all the graphic's going on, you can run multiple game servers while using around 40% CPU on a 1.8 ghz Old Intel :D

Trust me, Ive done it.

haha

Hmmm can u suggest a dhcp swicth box enabled product? preferably cheap
Networking is baiscly the only area i dont know much about :(
